Austin Peay Tops JSU Soccer, 2-0

Box Score CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State soccer team suffered its third straight setback on Sunday as Austin Peay downed the Gamecocks, 2-0, in Ohio Valley Conference soccer action on the APSU campus.

The setback dropped JSU to 10-6-2 on the season and 3-4-1 in the OVC with one weekend left in the regular season.  The Lady Govs completed the weekend sweep after claiming a win over Tenneesse Tech on Friday, coupled with Sunday's win.  APSU stands at 9-7-1 overall and 5-2-1 in league play.

The Lady Govs took control of the contest early on with a goal in the 15th minute of the match.  Tatiana Ariza sent a loose ball in front of the Jax State net into the back of the net for the first scoring play of the match.  Ariza was credited with five shot attempts in the contest.

JSU and APSU played as evenly as you could with APSU having a one-shot advantage over the Gamecocks, 7-6.  The Lady Govs would go on to post 13 total shots in the affair, while limiting JSU to just a pair of scoring opportunities in the second half.

“I Thought we came out stronger today in the first half and controlled the ball well,” aid head coach Julie Davis Carlson. “The APSU left flank did well all and caused us some problems which led to the first goal.  In the second half, APSU held a stronger percentage of possession which kept us from gaining momentum.”

APSU added a second half insurance goal off the foot of Joceline Quiceno in the 84th minute.  Quiceno took a cross that was set up by Ariza and Emily Perkins and headed it past JSU's Katelyn Geddings.

Senior Nathalee Lariviere led the Gamecocks' offensive charge with three shots, including a pair of on goal chances.  Geddings finished the game with seven saves.

“We did a better job in the midfield and reducing the load of shots and loose ball in our area, mentioned Carlson.”

Jax State returns home next weekend as it will host OVC front-runner UT Martin on Friday, Oct. 26 and close out the regular season on Sunday, Oct. 28 with a matinee contest with Southeast Missouri.  The UTM contest will be available on the OVC Digital Network and is slated to get underway at 7 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field.  JSU will honor its nine seniors prior to the Sunday match with SEMO.

“We had a monkey on our back that we got rid of and next weekend is critical,” added Carlson.
