JSU Soccer Treks To Bluegrass State For Pivotal OVC Matches

Live Stats: vs. EKU | vs. Morehead State | OVC Digital Network

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team will put its 3-0 start in the Ohio Valley Conference on the line this weekend as it travels to Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State on Friday and Sunday respectively.

Friday's EKU match will get underway at 3 p.m. CST in Richmond, Ky., while the duel versus the Eagles of Morehead State is slated to begin at Noon CST.  Both matches will be available via live stats at JSUGamecockSports.com.  The MSU contest will be shown on the OVC Digital Network.

The Gamecocks begin the month of October with a 10-2-1 overall mark and wins over OVC foes – Tennessee Tech on the road and a pair of home conference wins last weekend against Eastern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville.  JSU has reached the double-figure win total for just the fifth time in the program's history.  Jax State is just one of 17 NCAA Division I Soccer programs that have reached double digits in the win column through the first seven weeks of the season.

The Colonels of EKU enter the weekend on the heels of the Gamecocks with a 1-0-1 mark against OVC competition.  EKU opened league play with a 3-1 win over Morehead State and recorded a 1-1 draw with Belmont last weekend.  Friday's match will be the eighth all time between the two programs on the pitch.  EKU holds a 4-2-1 edge in the series.  Last season, EKU and JSU played to a 1-1 draw at the JSU Soccer Field.  The draw snapped a four-match winning streak by the Colonels after Jax State won the first two meetings in 2005 and 2006.

Morehead State struggled in the non-conference record with an overall mark of 1-8-1, but have a 1-1 worksheet in the OVC.  The Eagles topped Belmont, 2-1, last Sunday in Nashville, Tenn.  JSU and MSU also tied each other in 2011and the Eagles have claimed six of the previous ten match ups.

Offensively, the Gamecocks have scored 24 goals on the season and allowed just ten to the opposition.  Sophomore Courtney Hurt and freshman Kelsey Bright have produced five goals each to lead the squad.  Bright, from Kingwood, Texas, matched Hurt with a pair of goals in the SIUE contest.  She was named the CollegeSportsMadness.com OVC Player of the Week for her contributions to the pair of wins last weekend.  Senior Katie Manns was named the OVC Defensive Player of the Week after contributing on both ends of the field.  The Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.-native connected on a penalty kick and engineered an assist last Sunday against SIUE.  Manns also played all 180 minutes on the weekend and helped stave off an SIUE threat in the second half.  She has now moved into the top-10 on JSU's all-time career minutes chart.

Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Geddings was also honored by the league office this week after a stellar weekend performance with 25 saves and a shutout versus EIU.  The Warrior, Ala.-product registered 18 saves against SIUE, which ranks third all time for a single match at JSU. Geddings ranks in the top 20 in the NCAA in total saves with 78 (19th) and listed 13th in saves percentage (.892).  JSU ranks eighth in the NCAA in saves percentage as a team.   Leads the OVC in goals against average (0.74) and in saves pct. (.892).

Following this weekend's trip to the Bluegrass State, JSU returns home on Friday, Oct. 12 as it welcomes OVC newcomer Belmont to the JSU Soccer Field.
