MURRAY, Ky. – A six-run sixth lifted the Jacksonville State softball team to a 8-5 win in the nightcap of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at Murray State, earning a split after a 2-1 loss earlier on Saturday.
The Gamecocks (9-15, 4-1 OVC) got the big inning started with a two-run double from freshman Sara Borders and then got an RBI single from senior Kaycee Crow and an RBI grounder from freshman Shelby Holley. Those set up the final blow, a two-run homer from senior Kristin Graham that sank the Racers (9-5, 4-1 OVC) in the finale.
In that final game of the day, Crow got JSU on the board first with a solo homer down the left field line, a 1-0 lead that held for just a half inning. In the home half of the frame, Leslie Bridges doubled in Casey Castille with two outs to tie it up.
A fielding error at short by senior Kristin Graham led to another Racer run in the third, when a two-out grounder was misplayed and allowed Mo Ramsey to score and give MSU a 2-1 lead. JSU answered to tie it in the fourth, thanks to a Sara Borders single up the middle that scored Abbey Stepp after her infield single to start the inning.
JSU used the big inning to grab an 8-2 lead, but an error by Savannah Sloan at third and another miscue by Graham in the home half of the sixth cost the Gamecocks three unearned runs. The Racers' inning was kept alive after the two mistakes and they answered to cut JSU's advantage to 8-5.
Borders led the JSU offense by going 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot, while Crow went 2-for-5 in the second spot in the lineup.
Junior Hilary Phillips started the game for JSU and held the Racers to two runs, one earned, on six hits in four innings of work. The Ider, Ala., native struck out four and walked two before senior Sam Snow (3-4) took the circle. A native of Ranburne, Ala., Snow allowed three unearned runs on four hits in two innings of relief to earn the win. Sophomore Tiffany Harbin came on to pitch the seventh and earn her first save of the season.
CheyAnne Gaskey (1-1) suffered the loss for Murray after allowing six runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of relief.
In the opener, all of the scoring came in the second inning. JSU grabbed a 1-0 lead on a fielding error by Murray right fielder Mo Ramsey. After a walk to junior Jessica Guy and a single by junior Kelci Johnston, freshman Savannah Sloan's ball to right was misplayed and allowed Guy to score that first run.
The Racers answered right away, getting a leadoff walk by Ellyn Troup that set up a two-run homer from Stephanie Edwards that proved to be all they needed. The Gamecocks left 12 runners on base, including two in scoring position in the seventh.
Shelby Kosmecki (4-2) went the distance to earn the win, holding JSU to an unearned run on six hits. She did walk seven but struck out seven. Harbin (3-2) had her three-game winning streak snapped by allowing the two runs on six hits in six innings in the circle. She also struck out seven and walked just two.
Johnston notched two of the Gamecocks' six hits in four at bats, while Ramsey went 2-for-3 to lead MSU.
The two will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
