JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State couldn't get going at the plate on Thursday, when the Gamecocks dropped a 4-1 Ohio Valley Conference decision to Tennessee Tech at University Field.
The Gamecocks (15-18, 9-3 OVC) were held in check by Golden Eagles (12-18, 6-6 OVC) starter Holly Thomas, managing just three hits off the ace. Sophomore Hayden Crawford had one of those hits, a solo home run that tied the game in the bottom of the second. JSU still wins the season series with TTU after a doubleheader sweep in Cookeville, Tenn., on March 21.
TTU reclaimed the lead in the third on an RBI single by Chanelle Spalding and held JSU off the rest of the way. The Gamecocks got just five balls out of the infield and only two after the third, but still stranded eight runners. Thomas (9-8) struck out five and walked six in the win.
JSU ace Tiffany Harbin (7-3) suffered just her second loss in OVC play in 10 appearances, giving up four runs, three earned, on eight hits. The Hazel Green, Ala., native went the distance, striking out six and not issuing a walk.
Crawford, freshman Savannah Sloan and junior Krystal Ruth each grabbed one of the Gamecocks' three hits, while freshman Sara Borders went 0-for-1 but reached three times via a walk. Freshman Shelby Holley was 0-for-4, marking the first time in her collegiate career she has failed to reach base in a game.
Spalding drove in a run and scored one in a 2-for-3 afternoon, while Samantha Everett also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
JSU will play a three-game OVC series at Morehead State this weekend, with a Saturday doubleheader getting it started at 12 p.m. CT. The series will wrap up with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
