JACKSON, Tenn. – Four members of the Jacksonville State baseball team were recognized at Tuesday's annual awards banquet, held on the eve of the start of the Ohio Valley Conference Championship on Wednesday at Pringles Park.
Seniors Kyle Bluestein and Ben Waldrip were named to the All-OVC First Team, while senior Todd Hornsby was a second team selection. Freshman Travis Stout was also recognized as a member of the OVC's All-Freshman Team. The Gamecocks, seeded third in the tournament, will get play underway at 7 p.m. on Wednesday against sixth-seeded Southeast Missouri.
Bluestein, an outfielder from Cincinnati, earned First Team All-OVC honors for the first time in his career after nabbing a second-team selection as a junior a year ago. In 2012, the 6-foot-3, 208-pound right-handed slugger hit .332 with nine doubles, nine home runs and 39 RBI for the Gamecocks, while playing an error-free season, mostly in right field. In league games, Bluestein stepped up his game, batting .380 with six doubles, six homers and 28 RBI.
Waldrip garnered first-team honors for the second time in as many years for the Gamecocks, thanks to an impressive season at the plate by the Medford, Md., native. The lefty with a 6-foot-6, 245-pound frame belted 18 home runs and drove in 55 RBI for the Gamecocks. His 0.37 home runs per game leads all of Division I baseball, while his .682 slugging percentage ranks 10th in the nation. A .333 hitter on the year, he hit .393 in OVC play.
Hornsby, JSU's closer from Clay, Ala., grabbed all-conference honors for the second-straight season, as well. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound sidearm righty continues to close the door for the Gamecock bullpen in his final season. His 12 saves, seven of which have come in OVC play, are the 15th-most in the nation, while his 32 career saves are a JSU and an OVC record. He holds a 2.81 ERA and has held OVC hitters to a .235 batting average.
Stout has been a constant for JSU's pitching staff in his redshirt-freshman season. The native of Smyrna, Ga., is tied for the team lead in wins with a 5-1 record and is 3-0 in league play. His 25 appearances are second on the team only to Hornsby's 28 and his 47.0 innings on the hill are second-most out of the JSU bullpen to Hornsby's 48.0. A 5-foot-9, 180-pound righthander, Stout is holding opposing batters to a .227 average.
The Gamecocks begin their quest for a fourth OVC Tournament title on Wednesday against the Redhawks. A JSU win would set up a 3 p.m. matchup with No. 2 seed Eastern Kentucky on Thursday. Every pitch of the Gamecocks' action in Jackson, Tenn., will be broadcast live on the JSU Sports Network and can be heard on 91.9 FM or online at www.jsugamecocksports.com.
