JACKSON, Tenn. – Greg Bachman scored on a
Todd Hornsby wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning as Austin Peay claimed a 7-6 win over Jacksonville State to end the Gamecocks' run in the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament on Friday.
The Gamecocks defeated Eastern Kentucky 9-4 earlier in the day to advance to face the Governors in an elimination game.
Hornsby (3-4) gave up just two hits over the final 4 1/3 innings and one run after throwing 81 pitches to get stuck with the loss. Tyler Rogers (4-3) earns the win for Austin Peay after allowing just two hits in four innings of relief.
Reed Harper got the 11th inning rally started with a one-out single and Greg Bachman singled to right center to put runners on the corner, before Cody Hudson was intentionally walked to loaded the bases. Hornsby then got P.J. Torres to hit an infield grounder that JSU's
Andrew Bishop fielded and fired home for the second out of the inning with the force of Harper.
Hornsby then ran the count to 2-2 on Tyler Childress and was trying to hit the outside corner of the plate with a fastball, but the fifth pitch of the at-bat got by Gamecock catcher
Stephen Bartlett and Bachman raced home for the winning run.
The Gamecocks took an early lead after scoring two runs in the first inning after
Kyle Stone walked and
Scott Underwood followed with a single up the middle.
Kyle Bluestein followed with a two-out double to left center to score Stone and Underwood to give the Gamecocks a 2-0 lead.
Jax State added a run in the second inning when
Cal Lambert led off with a double to left field and moved to third on
Andrew Bishop's sacrifice bunt.
Michael Bishop followed with a single up the middle to score Lambert to push JSU's lead to 3-0.
Austin Peay got on the board in the home half of the second when Rolando Gautier and Michael Blanchard each drove in a run to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Gamecocks extended the lead in the third inning.
Sam Eberle led off with a triple and scored on
Ben Waldrip's sacrifice fly before Bluestein hit a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall to give Jax State a 5-2 lead in the top of the third inning.
Austin Peay scored two runs in the fourth inning when Jon Clinard and Jordan Hankins each drove in a run and then tied the game in the fifth inning after Bachman hit a solo home run to make the score 5-5.
Jacksonville State answered in the top of the sixth inning after Lambert led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, before coming in to score on Stone's RBI single to left field to give Jax State a 6-5 lead.
Austin Peay battled to tie the game in the seventh inning when Gautier walked with bases loaded to earn the RBI and make the score 6-6.
Lambert led the Gamecocks with three hits, while Bluestein and Stone each had two hits to lead the Gamecocks, while Bluestein led the team with three RBI. Bachman led Austin Peay with four hits, while Blanchard and Gautier each had two hits.
