Gamecocks Fall At Belmont; Hosts Tennessee Tech On Sunday

Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State soccer team suffered a 5-1 loss in Ohio Valley Conference play to Belmont at E.S. Rose Park on the Bruins' campus.

The setback drops JSU to 4-9-1 on the season and 0-5 against league competition.  BU moves to 4-6-2 and 2-2-1 in the OVC.

The Bruins struck first with a goal within the first nine 8:30 minutes of the contest with a ball that found the back of the net from 25 yards out.  Allie Hicks curved a perfect shot past JSU's Taylor Hammond to give BU the early lead.  BU added what would be the eventual game winner in the 39th minute with a penalty kick goal from Emily Jones.

JSU shaved the lead in half right before the intermission break with a goal off the foot of Brianna Boutziouvis in the 44th minute.  The sophomore from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada knocked it in from 20 yards out and into the right corner.  Freshman Abbey Clausen was credited with her first career assist.

BU added an insurance goal early in the second half with a goal in the 48th minute.  Meg Howard's shot from 12 yards out, bounced off the left post and rolled in to the back of the net.

Belmont tallied nine of its 18 total shots in the second half, while holding JSU to just one shot in the final 45 minutes.  The Gamecocks, who lead the league in total shots, finished with seven attempts.

The Bruins tacked on two more goals in the final half to seal the win.  Meredith Martin connected on a header off of a corner kick in the 57th minute.  BU took advantage of its second penalty kick of the match in the 63rd minute as .Amy Jo Anderson registered the goal.  The five goals surrendered by JSU is the most since Eastern Kentucky posted a 5-0 win over Jax State in 2010.

The Gamecocks return to action at home on Sunday, Oct. 13, hosting Tennessee Tech.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.  Admission is free.
