The Southeast Missouri Game
JSU GAME NOTES
Opening Comments:
"Obviously, this is not a fun one (game) to come in too after a tough loss on the road, after getting way behind early and the things that went with that. We are extremely disappointed and there is no other way to say it. We had high expectations going in to that game, but give Eastern Illinois credit – they have a great team. They did the things that they needed to do and we didn't. As we talked about in the team meeting this morning, thank God we have another chance to play and it is going to be senior day and we have playoff hopes alive. We want to finish up on a great note and play our best game of the year this week. This is our 'Super Bowl' this week and that is how we will approach it. We have to put last week behind us and sometimes that is hard to do, but our guys have been really good about bouncing back from the two losses we had previous."
On Southeast Missouri:
"I think Southeast Missouri has a really good offense and they have ran the ball extremely well against everybody. They are very reminiscent to the old Nebraska teams. Their quarterback is a really good runner and they will run many different options. It is a very big offense and very solid on defense and good in the kicking game. The record hasn't always indicated that, but they played Ole Miss real close and they are coming in here off of a win. We are expecting a team to come in here and play for their seniors, just like we are going to play for ours."
On SEMO's Spencer Davis:
"He is really a great player, he is the guy that they run their reverses to a lot and he is really a good kick off returner. I think they have led the league in kick off returns for a number of years and he is just a scat back that can fly. He is also their punt returner, so I think if you look at special teams, that is the guy that does some pretty things on special teams and we will have to be on the look out for him."
On SEMO's quarterback Scott Lathrop:
"He is a runner first, but he can really throw the ball. He reminds me so much of those Nebraska guys – Frost, Crouch and those guys that are tailback at quarterback, yet he can throw the ball and is very accurate. The things that they do offensively are different. These are things that ten years ago, we saw every week – two-back runs and down hill runs, lead options and zone options. We don't see that very often anymore, so it is kind of different to see that."
On the senior class:
"When you get to talking about it, it gets emotional. They are like your kids and it is like a big family. For those guys to buy-in and not know us and to be asked so much of them, I am really proud of them. It is a good group of guys and hopefully this isn't our last week with them."
On Gavin Ellis:
"The one of the best things about Gavin is how good of an athlete that he is. We didn't know how good of one he was until we got out there and saw him moving around. He is a great target and his blocking has improved immensely and we have had a lot of NFL scouts look at him. I think he will have a chance to play at the next level. He has been a great leader and comes to work everyday."
Taylor Johnstone, Sr., OL
On facing SEMO:
"This will be just the second time I have played against them. I played them last year and I just remember that they are pretty big up front. They have been solid every time we have played them.
On bouncing back from losses:
"Our coaches are a big part of why we have been able to bounce back from losses. Nobody likes to lose and nobody likes to lose like Saturday because it was embarrassing. I wouldn't expect anything less than everybody to be fired up ready to go and get ready for Saturday. I know the coaches will be riding us today."
On Senior Day:
"I am sure it will be an emotional day. A lot of us seniors got emotional last Saturday after we lost the game. We saw all of our hopes and dreams go down the hole, but there is probably a good chance that we can still get in and we are looking at it that way."
Gavin Ellis, Sr. TE
On facing SEMO:
"They have some pretty athletic guys and their defensive ends can definitely move and the linebackers can fill in a hurry."
On bouncing back from losses:
"This guy that is sitting next to me (Coach Clark) is the reason we have bounced back because he tells us that it is alright and to put it behind us and move on. The first thing he says after the game is - don't get down on anybody and don't point fingers. We are a team and a family and we will fight through this and move on to the next game."
On Senior Day:
"I go back to my last high school football game and it was definitely emotional and I am not looking at it as my last game. We are going to go out there and play as hard as we can and hope everything works out to where we will have several more games."
