CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Reed Harper combined to have five hits to lead Austin Peay to a pair of wins over Jacksonville State on Friday. The Govs won 5-4 in the opener, and then claimed a 10-1 win in the night cap.
Austin Peay improved to 19-3 and 4-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference, while JSU dropped to 11-14, 5-3 in the conference.
In the opener, P.J. Torres and Brett Carlson each drove in a pair of runs to lead Austin Peay to a 5-4 win over the Gamecocks.
Lee Ridenhour (4-0) had six strikeouts in seven innings to earn this fourth win of the year for the Governors, while Tyler Rogers recorded the final three outs to pick up his ninth save. JSU's
Casey Antley (4-2) allowed eight hits and gave up all five runs to suffer the loss for the Gamecocks.
Austin Peay took the lead in the fourth inning after Cody Hudson and Reed Harper both reached on two-out singles and Torres walked to load the bases. Carlson then followed with a single to right field to score Hudson and Harper and give APSU a 2-0 lead.
The Governors added three more runs in the fifth inning after Dylan Riner singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Jordan Hankins followed with a RBI single to left center to score Riner and give Austin Peay a 3-0 lead. Craig Massoni and Cody Hudson both walked to load the bases, before Torres doubled down the left field corner to score two runs and give APSU a 5-0 lead.
Jax State scored in the seventh inning after
Coty Blanchard led off with a double and
Paschal Petrongolo singled to right field to score Blanchard to cut the lead to 5-1.
Eddie Mora-Loera followed with a single up the middle and
Andrew Bishop then drove in a run with a double down the left field line to cut the lead to 5-2. Mora Loera came around to score on
Cal Lambert's infield grounder, and then
Adam Miller drove in a run with a RBI single to cut the lead to 5-4, but the Gamecocks could get no closer.
Michael Bishop led the Gamecocks with a pair of hits, while Hudson and Harper each had to hits to lead Austin Peay in the opener.
In the second game, Casey Delgado had a career-high nine strikeouts and allowed just six hits to earn his fourth win of the year.
Taylor Shields (4-2) did have six strikeouts, but gave up 10 hits and six runs to suffer the loss for the Gamecocks.
The Governors jumped out to an early lead after scoring four runs in the first inning after Craig Massoni and Torres each drove in a run, and Harper drove in two more runs as Austin Peay took a 4-0 lead.
APSU added a run in the second inning after Massoni drove in a run with a single to right field, and the Govs pushed the lead to 6-0 after Kevin Corey drove in a run in the third inning.
Austin Peay extended the lead to 8-0 after Rolando Gautier and Dylan Riner each scored in the sixth inning, before the Gamecocks got on the board in the seventh inning.
Steven Barlett led off the seventh with a single down the third base line and
Gavin Golsan followed with a single through th left side. Bartlett moved to third after
Michael Bishop flied out near the centerfield wall, and then came in to score after Miller had an infield single to cut the lead to 8-1.
Hankins then hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning for the final margin.
Miller had two hits to lead the Gamecocks, while
Michael Bishop extended his hitting streak to seven games. Massoni had four this, while Harper and Hankins each had three to lead the Governors.
The two teams will play the final game of the three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at noon on Saturday.
