JSU Soccer Drops 4-2 Decision To Charleston Southern

Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Jacksonville State soccer team dropped a hard fought 4-2 decision to Charleston Southern on the final day of the Nike Tournament on Sunday to wrap up a tough weekend in the Palmetto State.

The loss drops the Gamecocks to 1-2-1 on the season, while the Bucs of CSU improve to 3-1 on the season and a pair of wins on the weekend.  CSU downed Canisius College, 5-3 on Friday.  JSU suffered its first setback of the young season to The Citadel, 1-0.

Both teams combined for 39 shots with the Bucs finishing with 25 total shots and 12 on goal scoring opportunities.  The Gamecocks were limited to just four shots in the first 45 minutes, but put together a 10-shot second half outing.  After CSU took a 2-0 lead by the 34th minute of the match with goals by Toni Lashley at the 15 minute-mark and Chelsea Frankeny adding the second goal of the opening half. 

Jax State sliced the deficit in half shortly after Frankeny's goal as sophomore Kelsey Bright knocked in her first goal of the season after taking an assist from Kristen Hoo.  Hoo, a transfer from West Virginia Wesleyan recorded her fist assist in a Gamecock uniform.

JSU equalized in the 66th minute with a goal off the foot of junior Jackie Rush.  It marked Rush's second equalizing goal of the season and it came from a solid cross into the box from sophomore Katt Dowd.  Rush was one of four Gamecocks to post multiple shot attempts in the affair.  The Trophy Club, Texas-native had three shots, while Bright led all JSU players with five attempts.  Sophomores Sydney Keller and Briana Boutziouvis each had two shot attempts.

CSU added a pair of goals within a seven-minute span to take the lead and add an insurance goal in the 79th and 86th minute respectively.  Anna Sells carded both goals for the Bucs to seal the win.

After playing the first four matches away from the JSU Soccer Field, the Gamecocks eagerly await the chance to open their nine-match homestand on Friday, Sept. 6 against Alabama A&M.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.  JSU will play six of its remaining seven matches in the month of September on the home pitch.  Admission is free to all JSU soccer matches.
