Box Score 2 MONTGOMERY – The Jacksonville State volleyball team claimed the 2013 ISTAP Collegiate Cup Championship on Saturday after picking up two victories on the second day of the tournament hosted by Alabama State.
The Gamecocks improve to 6-6 on the year after recording sweeps over New Orleans (1-10) and Alabama State (5-7). JSU swept all four opponents in the tournament while finishing as tournament champions for the second straight year.
JSU opened the day Saturday with a 25-20, 25-16, 25-11 sweep over New Orleans. Sophomore
Emily Rutherford led the way with 13 kills while junior
Nicole Merget added 10 kills.
Senior
Abbey Heredia led the way with 35 assists and eight digs. The Gamecocks posted a .323 hitting percentage on the day while holding New Orleans to a .057 hitting percentage. Defensively, JSU was led by senior
Kelly Cole with 13 digs while sophomore
Grace Anbouba added 10 digs.
Rutherford helped the Gamecocks repeat as tournament champions after posting a double-double in the sweep over Alabama State (25-16, 25-19, 25-19). The Georgetown, Texas, native led the way with 15 kills and 10 digs while posting a .462 attack percentage.
Heredia again paced JSU with 34 kills and led an offensive attack that recorded a .319 hitting percentage.

The Gamecocks will return to the road this weekend at the Lady Vol Comcast Classic hosted by Tennessee. The Gamecocks will take on Coastal Carolina at 3 p.m. on Friday before taking on Tennessee at 9 a.m. and Georgia Tech at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
