JACKSONVILLE – Eastern Kentucky scored an early second half goal en route to a 1-0 win over Jacksonville State in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both squads on Friday at the JSU Soccer Field.
The Gamecocks dropped their second consecutive home outing and fell to 4-5-1 on the season and snapped their three-game winning streak in OVC lid lifters. The Colonels registered their first win of the season after entering the weekend 0-7-1. EKU has won six of the last seven meetings with Jax State with the shutout.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes, EKU's Kristan Paynter booted a deep shot from the right side of the pitch and sailed it past JSU's
Taylor Hammond for what would be the game winner. EKU had a balanced attack with 14 total shots and seven in each half. The Colonels controlled the pace and kept possession throughout the first 45 minutes and limiting JSU to just a pair of shots.
JSU, who entered the contest as one of the top-shooting squads in the OVC, turned in a season-low six total shots. The Gamecocks made a coupe of runs at the Colonels midway through the second half, but could not find an equalizer. Junior
Jackie Rush posted half of JSU's shots with three on the night.
The Gamecocks wrap up their four-match homestand on Sunday, Sept. 29, hosting Morehead State at the JSU Soccer Field. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. The Eagles were idle Friday night.
