Gamecocks Battle Alabama A&M In 2013 Home Debut: After four matches away from Jacksonville to start the 2013 season, first-year head coach
Neil Macdonald's squad opens its nine-match home schedule Friday against in-state foe Alabama A&M. Tonight's contest also marks Macdonald's first home contest at the JSU Soccer Field. Jax State enters tonight's in-state battle with a 1-2-1 overall mark. The Gamecocks opened the 2013 season with a 1-0 win over McNeese State on Aug. 23 and posted a draw the following Sunday at Louisiana Lafayette. Last weekend, JSU suffered a pair of hard fought setbacks at the Nike Tournament in Charleston, S.C. The Red and White fell to The Citadel, 1-0, last Friday and dropped a 4-2 decision to Charleston Southern in its last outing. The Lady Bulldogs of AAMU have dropped the first four matches of the season. In AAMU's last outing, Ohio Valley Conference member Murray State topped the Lady Bulldogs, 10-0, a week ago in Huntsville, Ala.
The Jax State-AAMU Series: Tonight's contest will be the fifth meeting all-time between the two schools that are separated by 100 miles. Jax State holds a 3-1 lead in the series, including a 5-0 win last season on the Alabama A&M campus. The Lady Bulldogs lone win in the series came during the 2008 season with a 4-2 win here in Jacksonville. In the three wins, the Gamecocks have out-scored the Maroon and White, 11-0.   Â
Fast Start For Freshmen: The Gamecocks' roster features 10 freshmen and six of them have seen playing time early in the season.Â
Mackenzie Bellows, from Calgary, Alberta Canada, has started all four matches and posted her first collegiate goal last Friday against The Citadel.Â
Blair Barker registered JSU's first goal of the season with a game-winning goal in the season opener at McNeese State.Â
Sweet Home September: After playing the first four matches away from Jacksonville, the Gamecocks will play six of their next seven matches here at the JSU Soccer Field. Following tonight's duel with AAMU, JSU will host another in-state program next Friday as it will welcome the Trojans of Troy. Match time is set for 7 p.m. A road trip to Mercer on Sunday, Sept. 15 is squeezed in between the Troy contest and JSU's four-match homestand that begins on Sept. 20. Jax State begins OVC play on Sept. 27 and 29, hosting Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State respectively.
