Gamecock Men, Women In Fifth at GolfWeek Program Challenge

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Both the Jacksonville State men's and women's golf teams are in fifth place after the first round of the GolfWeek Program Challenge on Sunday.

The Gamecock men fired a 2-under 286 in their first round of the season on the par-72, 6,940-yard True Blue Golf Course and are just six shots behind leader James Madison with 36 holes left. The JSU women carded a 13-over 297 on the Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and are seven shots behind first-place Campbell. JSU is the only program in the event with both men's and women's squads in the top five after round one.

On the men's side, junior Tomasz Anderson and freshman Pablo Torres each turned in two-under 70s to tie for 10th in the 60-player field. Anderson, the Gamecocks' top returning player and the 53rd-ranked player in the latest World Amateur Rankings, birdied four holes in his season debut.

Torres also birdied four holes in his collegiate debut to shoot his 70. The duo sits four shots behind Western Carolina's J.T. Poston atop the leaderboard.

Junior Franco Grillo and freshman Tom Lawton sit in a tie for 18th after each turning in one-over par scores of 73, while Camilo Aguado's 77 rounded out the Gamecocks' scores and puts him in a tie for 49th after his collegiate debut.

On the women's side, the Gamecocks got an even-par 71 from sophomore Melania Bajo Geijo to put her in a tie for fourth. She is two shots off of the lead, held by Campbell's Lisbeth Brooks.

Junio0r Maya Parsons sits in a tie for 10th in the 60-player field after a two-over 73, while freshman Anne Kathrin Albrecht's 76 puts her in 25th. Sophomore Melani Sisto is one shot back in 30th after a 77, while Sophomore Erin Gunnels rounds out the Gamecocks lineup after a 78 in the opening round.

Both teams will continue play in the 12-team event on Monday with the second-round of competition. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
