JACKSONVILLE – Griff Gordon and Stephen Bartlett each had three hits to lead Jacksonville State to a 9-5 win over UAB in the 10th inning as the two teams completed Tuesday's halted game.
The two teams resumed a game that began 24 hours earlier in Birmingham, but was halted in the seventh inning due to heavy rains that moved over Regions Park. The teams resumed action in Jacksonville on Wednesday since both teams were already scheduled to play.
JSU's Travis Stout (1-0) tossed two innings of relief to pick up his first win of the season, while UAB's Sam Kelley gave up all four runs in the extra frame to suffer the loss for the Blazers.
The Gamecocks (10-5) held a 4-3 lead when the game resumed, but the Blazers battled back in the home half of the eighth inning to tie the game after Nathan Vincent scored on Ryan Prinzing's infield grounder to tie the game at 4-4.
Jax State answered in the ninth inning to take a 5-4 lead after Gavin Golsan scored on Gordon's RBI single to right field, but UAB (13-4) managed to tie the game in the bottom of the inning after Ivan De Jesus scored on a sacrifice fly to force extra innings.
The Gamecocks then scored four runs – all with two outs – on three hits as Chase Silvani, Eddie Mora-Loera and Peyton Williams each had a RBI to give JSU a 9-5 lead. Stout then recorded the final three outs to secure the win for the Gamecocks.
Golsan finished with a pair of hits and scored a career-high four runs to go along with the three hits from Gordon and Bartlett as the Gamecocks finished with 14 hits in the game.
UAB's Griffin Gum had two hits as the Gamecocks limited the Blazers to just six hits in the game.
