Live Video vs. TroyJACKSONVILLE – In the midst of a four-match road trip, the Jacksonville State soccer team returns to action this weekend with a trip to the south part of the state.
The Gamecocks (3-3) begin the weekend slate on Friday afternoon with a visit to Troy (4-2) to face the Trojans at 4 p.m. JSU closes out the two-match trip on Sunday against Alabama State (3-3) in Montgomery. Match time for the JSU-ASU contest is set for 1 p.m.
JSU and Troy will renew a rivalry that dates back to the 1997 season and will be the 14
th meeting between the two in-state nemesis. Last season, Jax State snapped a three match-losing streak to the Trojans with a 1-0 double overtime result. Prior the Troy's three consecutive wins, JSU had won nine straight over the Trojans. JSU and the Hornets of ASU will face off for the fourth time overall with the Red and White claiming the three previous matches, including a tough, 2-1, win over ASU last season in Jacksonville.
The Gamecocks' offense has flourished with 25 goals through six matches on the season. The NCAA released its first statistical report for the season and JSU ranks third in NCAA Division I Women's Soccer for scoring average with a 4.17 mark entering the weekend.
Offensively, JSU is led by the tandem of redshirt junior
Courtney Hurt and junior
Kelsey Bright. The duo has combined for 10 of the 25 goals and both are feeding off each other on the pitch. Hurt earned the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor earlier in the week after a solid weekend against Jackson State and at Alabama. Hurt, from Huntsville, Ala., was instrumental in the Gamecocks' 7-1 win over Jackson State on Friday night on the home pitch. She netted a pair of back-to-back goals in the opening half against the Tigers of JSU. For the second consecutive week, she narrowly missed out on a hat trick.
Her five goals this season is shared atop the conference in that statistical category with Morehead State's Jade Flory, who Hurt shared the weekly honor with. Hurt is listed 22
nd in NCAA Division I Women's Soccer in total goals posted.
Sophomore
Meara Johnson ranks among the league leaders in saves per game with a 5.16 average. Johnson ranks eighth in the conference in total saves with 16.
Both matches will be available via live stats as well as live video for the Troy match.
