Gamecock Soccer Closes Out Non-Conference Slate at Ball State

Live Stats | Live Video

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team closes out the non-conference schedule this weekend with a rare Saturday contest in Muncie, Indiana against Ball State.  Match time is set for 1 p.m. CST at the Briner Sports Complex.

Live stats and live video links will be available at JSUGamecockSports.com.

The Gamecocks enter the final tune up before conference play with a 4-4 mark after posting a 3-0 win last time out on the pitch against Alabama State last Sunday.  The Cardinals of BSU will be riding a three-match unbeaten streak coming in to the Saturday match as they posted a pair of draws to Ohio Valley Conference foe Morehead State and last Sunday versus Navy.  Last Friday, BSU topped Delaware, 1-0.

Saturday will test Jax State's offense which ranks seventh in NCAA Women's Division I Soccer in scoring average through the first eight matches.  The Gamecocks are averaging 3.63 goals per match.  BSU enters the match ranked 23rd in the nation in team save average at 0.875 percentage.

JSU's tandem of Kelsey Bright and Courtney Hurt has combined for 12 of the team's 29 goals this season.  Hurt, from Huntsville, Ala., netted her sixth goal of the season in the setback at Troy last weekend, while Bright matched Hurt in Sunday's duel at ASU.  The duo ranks tied for second in the OVC in goals scored, trailing Morehead State's Jade Flory, who has seven goals on the season.  Defensively, the Red and White have been consistent on the back line with the consistent play of senior Brianna Salverda.  Salverda registered her first career assist against ASU.

Gabby Veldman leads the Cardinals offensively with two goals, both of which were game-winners, and two assists for six total points.  Sophomore Leah Mattingly was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Cardinals limit Delaware and Navy to a combined one goal in 200 minutes of action. She also scored the decisive goal on a penalty kick in the win over the Blue Hens.

After four matches away from the JSU Soccer Field, the Gamecocks return home on Friday, Sept. 26 as they welcome the Skyhawks of UT Martin to Jacksonville.  UTM claimed the regular season league title in 2013 and will begin its defense of that crown against JSU at 7 p.m.
