Volleyball Earns Win By Way of Forfeit Tuesday

LORMAN, Miss. – The Jacksonville State volleyball team picked up a win on Tuesday night via forfeit by Alcorn State as match officials were unavailable for the game.
 
Rules state that in an event of a forfeit, the winning team is credited with a 3-0 victory. Jax State's record improves to 12-17 overall.
 
With both teams present, the decision was made by both staffs to play an exhibition match. Individual and team statistics from Tuesday's match will not count toward season totals.
 
JSU fell behind 7-3 to begin the first set before rallying to tie, 8-8, on a kill by freshman Mackenzie Rombach. The Gamecocks tied the match again at 11 on sophomore Charis Ludtke's service ace. A 6-0 run for JSU put the Gamecocks ahead, 16-10. The Lady Braves cut the deficit to two, 17-15, but weren't able to get any closer. JSU went on to win, 25-20.
 
In the second set, an early 3-3 tie was broken by sophomore Jennifer Hart's quick kill that the setter dumped over the net. Jax State maintained a narrow lead all the way to an 18-14 advantage. A 3-0 spurt made it 21-14, opening the door for JSU to secure the second frame. Freshman Mandee Eberle had a strong night, including a pair of kills and a service ace in the closing points of the second set.
 
JSU got off to its best start in the third. A quick 7-4 lead forced a timeout from the home Braves. Sophomore Allyson Zuhlke and freshman Kim Krutsinger had strong final frames as the Gamecocks finished the night with a 25-17 win.
 
JSU begins a five-game homestand over the next two weeks, beginning Friday when Ohio Valley Conference leader Murray State comes to Jacksonville. On Saturday, the Gamecocks host Austin Peay. Admission is free to all JSU home volleyball matches.
