Soccer Looks To Clinch OVC Tourney Berth at Belmont Thursday

Live Stats | Live Video

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team will head to Nashville in search of its second consecutive trip to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament as a berth in postseason play is on the line in the regular season finale with Belmont on Thursday.

The Bruins and Gamecocks will kick off at 6 p.m. at Belmont's E.S. Rose Park.  The match will be available on the OVC Digital Network.

A second consecutive trip to the OVC Soccer Tournament for the Gamecocks would be just the second time the program has achieved the feat since joining the league.  The last time JSU was among the field for the OVC postseason event was in 2004 and 2005.  JSU advanced to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament in the final year as a member of the league in 2002 and earned a berth in the 2003 OVC Tournament.

JSU enters the final match of the regular season looking to snap a two-match losing skid after falling to Southeast Missouri and Eastern Kentucky on the past two Sundays.  EKU was able to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit to knock off JSU last Sunday in the JSU's home finale.  The setback to the Colonels could prove to be costly for the Gamecocks in terms of hosting a first round contest on Sunday, November 1 (7-9-1, 4-4-1 OVC) as they will need a win to clinch a spot in the tournament and will need UT Martin and SEMO to play to a draw.  If JSU records a winning result over the Bruins (4-11-2, 3-5-1 OVC) and help from others in the league, JSU would host one of the first round contests at the JSU Soccer Field.

The semifinals and finals of the OVC Soccer Tournament will be hosted by Murray State, who claimed the regular season crown.  The semifinals and championship match will be held on Friday, November 6 and Sunday, November 8 respectively.

Seniors Kelsey Bright and Courtney Hurt share the team lead in goals this season with four each.  Bright registered JSU's goal in the setback to EKU last Sunday to get level with Hurt in goals-scored this season.  Bright has 26 career goals and has inched closer to breaking the school record for career shots.  The Kingwood, Texas native has tallied 205 career shots and needs six more to break the all-time mark, which was recently set by former Gamecock Jackie Rush as she concluded her stint at JSU last season after totaling 210 career shots.  Hurt will also etch her name on the career goals list with 22 career goals and 144 shots to her credit.  The Huntsville, Alabama forward currently ranks fourth on JSU's career assist chart with 15 career assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Robinson will look to continue her solid play in goal.  Robinson has posted five shutouts this season, including three against conference opponents and has made 87 saves.  She ranks among the best in the OVC in saves and saves per match.

The OVC will release the 2015 OVC Soccer Tournament bracket after completion of all matches on Thursday night.
