Gamecocks Drop First Road Test at Middle Tennessee

Box Score

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A goal in the 20th minute and great defense by Middle Tennessee State staved off a strong second half push by the Jacksonville State soccer team in a 1-0 win by the Blue Raiders at Dean Hayes Stadium on Friday night.

The loss dropped the Gamecocks to 1-2 on the season, while MTSU improved to 2-0 overall as both wins came against the Ohio Valley Conference.  Jax State will look to bounce back again like they did last weekend on Sunday with an afternoon tilt with Lipscomb in Nashville, Tennessee.  Kick off is set for 1 p.m.

MTSU's Cameron Cox gave her club the game-winning goal in the 20th minute after she drove the ball in to the box and scored off of a deflection.  After a solid defensive effort by the Blue Raiders the rest of the way, Cox's goal would be all MTSU would need for the result.  MTSU turned in 18 total shots and had eight of those by intermission.  The Blue Raiders added 10 more in the second half.

The MTSU defense limited Jax State's offensive threat in the first 45 minutes as it allowed just two first-half chances by the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks turned in a stellar second half performance with nine shots in the half, but could not put an equalizing goal on the board.  MTSU goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer made two key saves in the second half to preserve the win.  Brouwer prevented both of Courtney Hurt's scoring opportunities in the second half. Hurt led the Gamecock threat in the second half with three shot attempts.  JSU finished with 11 total shots after being credited with nine in the second period.  Senior Kelsey Bright and freshman Madison Carruthers added two shots in the contest.

JSU sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Robinson registered double figure saves for the first time in 2015 with 10 stops.  MTSU's Tori Hawkins carded a game-high four shots in the win.

The Lady Bisons of LU enter the Sunday contest unbeaten on the season after playing Cincinnati to a scoreless draw on Thursday night.  LU blanked Ball State last Sunday for its first win of the season.
