Jax State Tops TTU on Wednesday Night

Box Score COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State volleyball team matched its overall win total from a season ago, and moved to 4-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 3-1 (25-23, 14-25, 25-20, 25-15) victory on the road Wednesday night at Tennessee Tech.

Tech (5-13, 1-4) opened the match with a 6-3 lead early in the first. JSU (14-9, 4-1) came back to tie the frame at 8-8, and continue on to a 12-9 advantage, forcing a TTU timeout. The Gamecocks built their largest lead of the set to seven, 23-16, following a kill by junior Charis Ludtke, but Tech made a late push with a 6-1 run to make it 24-22. JSU took the next point to save the first and take a 1-0 match lead.

After a .289 hitting mark in the first, the Gamecocks hit sub-.100 in the second with nine kills and eight errors as TTU bounced back to even the match with a 25-14 set victory. JSU responded quickly in the third, jumping out to a 5-1 lead and extending that margin to seven at 17-10. An ensuing 5-0 Tech run, ended by Mackenzie Rombach and Shayla Schmidt's combined block, cut the deficit to two late. Jax State took the final points to win 25-20 for a 2-1 advantage.

The fourth stanza was point-for-point in the early stages, Ludtke and freshman Kaylee Frear assisted on a key block to give JSU a 9-8 advantage which sparked a 6-1 run and forced a TTU timeout. From there, JSU increased its advantage to double-digits with a 22-12 score as time ran out for a Golden Eagle comeback.

Freshman setter Rachel Perucki dished 35 assists to finish one shy of her high mark of 36 against Charleston Southern earlier in the year. The Tomball, Texas, product guided four Gamecocks to double-digit kills led by Frear's 13. Sadie Anderson finished the night with 11 kills, while Ludtke and Rombach each had 10. Rombach also matched her career-high mark with nine blocks for the third-consecutive match. For balls that did make it past the net, Hannah Kirk collected a team-best 19 digs followed by J'Nae Fraser with 14.

"It's really nice to get a road win like that," said third-year head coach Terry Gamble. "Tennessee Tech is a good team, and even tougher at home. For us, those are the games that help us grow as a team, by going on the road and winning conference matches like those. It'll be nice to get back and have a chance to play in front of our home fans this weekend."

JSU closes a three-game road swing returning to Pete Mathews Coliseum for a 2 pm. match versus Southeast Missouri State on Sunday afternoon, before embarking on another 4-match road trip. Sunday is JSU's "Pink-Out" match, with T-shirts for sale for $15 with proceeds going to the fight against cancer. Admission to all home JSU matches is free.
