BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Jacksonville State's seven-game winning streak came to a halt with a 10-7 loss at Samford on Tuesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The Gamecocks suffered their first loss since March 9 to in-state foe Troy and dropped the overall record to 13-6. The Bulldogs improved to 12-9 on the season. The two rivals will meet next Tuesday, March 29 at Rudy Abbott Field.
JSU, coming off a three-game Ohio Valley Conference weekend sweep of Austin Peay and scoring 25 runs on Sunday in the series finale, picked up right where it left off on Sunday, scoring four runs on three doubles in the first inning. Sophomore
Clayton Daniel started the trio of doubles to drive in the first run. The Guntersville, Alabama native was pushed across the plate on senior
Tyler Gamble's double to right field. Gamble, playing near his hometown of Alabaster, Alabama, finished the night with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate. He posted a single in the fifth and added his second double of the night in the seventh. As a team JSU collected four doubles and now has 22 doubles in the last eight games.
JSU added a run in the second with Daniel's second RBI in as many at bats with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring
Gavin Golsan. Daniel finished with a multi-hit night along with reigning OVC Co-Player of the Week,
Josh Bobo, also had a pair of hits in the setback.
The Bulldogs' lineup, one of the top-hitting lineups among the nation's leaders, did its damage against the Jax State pitching staff beginning with a four-run second. The inning was highlighted by a base-clearing triple by T.J. Dixon. The big inning sparked SU as it would score all 10 of its runs from the second inning through the fifth. SU finished with 18 hits off of Gamecock pitching. JSU's
Colton Pate suffered the loss.
After Samford equalized with a run in the third, JSU took a 5-4 lead on senior

SU's Heath Quinn, the NCAA Division I leader in home runs, added his 11
th home run of the season in the fourth broke the 5-all deadlock with a three-run blast to left center. SU's Stephen Jones handcuffed the JSU bats as he tossed three innings and scattered three hits and gave up his only run on the McCummings home run. Jones picked up his second win of the season as he was one of six Bulldog pitchers to see action.
JSU played an unearned run in the sixth as Golsan scored his second of three runs on a miss-handled play off the bat of
Peyton Williams. Golsan finished the night with three stolen bases and now has 10 swiped bases on the season. The Gamecocks' final run of the night came on a pinch hit triple by sophomore
Taylor Hawthorne, scoring Golsan on the play.
