JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team takes to the road again this week to compete in Georgia Southern's "Bash in the Boro" tournament in Statesboro, Ga.
The Gamecocks (0-3) are coming off their opening weekend tournament at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., where they took the Falcons to five sets, and later fell to Grand Canyon and Montana State.
Junior
Hannah Kirk, JSU's returning libero who entered 2016 with over 800 career digs, collected another 40 in the opening weekend on her way to making the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic All-Tournament Team. Seven other Gamecocks picked up double-digit digs, including newcomers
Sadie Anderson,
Katie Will,
Maddie Cloutier,
J'Nae Fraser and
Rachel Perucki. The defense was assisted up front courtesy of 13 blocks by sophomore
Mackenzie Rombach and 11 more from freshman
Kaylee Frear.
Frear was also a key piece for the offense with 37 kills over JSU first three matches. Junior
Allyson Zuhlke leads the team with 39, while Rombach and Anderson each have 19. Directing the offense was a joint operation during the opening weekend by junior
Jennifer Hart and freshmen Perucki and
Shayla Schmidt.
In Statesboro, Jax State will meet Georgia Southern first at 1 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, before battling The Citadel later that day. The host Eagles (0-3) faced tough competition in their first tournament in State College, Pa., last weekend, falling to nationally-ranked opponents North Carolina and Penn State. The Citadel (2-1) went five sets in all three of its opening-weekend matches, including a 3-2 victory over Ohio Valley Conference member, Morehead State.
On Friday, JSU continues tournament play facing Charleston Southern and Savannah State. CSU (1-3) dropped three matches last weekend, but enters this weekend on a positive note after sweeping South Carolina State on Tuesday night. The Tigers of SSU are still searching for their first win after opening the season at Georgia.
