JACKSONVILLE – With Ohio Valley Conference Tournament implications on the line with three matches left in the regular season, the Jacksonville State soccer team will play two of the final three at home this weekend, hosting Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State at the JSU Soccer Field.
The Gamecocks will face OVC frontrunner EKU on Friday at 7 p.m. before closing out the home schedule on Sunday with a 1 p.m. kickoff with the MSU. Admission is free to both matches. JSU will be offering free food and halftime games on Sunday with the Eagles. The final two home matches will also be available on the OVC Digital Network.
JSU enters the weekend one point out of the newly eight-team OVC Tournament field, which was instituted prior to the 2017 season. Jax State has collected six points through the first seven matches of the season with wins over Austin Peay and last weekend against Eastern Illinois. The Colonels have accumulated 15 points with an unbeaten mark in the league. EKU has four wins and three draws in the first seven matches of the league slate. MSU (3-9-1, 2-3-1 OVC) begins the weekend in Cookeville, Tennessee with a contest with Tennessee Tech.
Jax State is led by sophomore Daniel Monroe, who has seven goals this season and ranks among the OVC leaders in goals, shots and points per game. The Villa Rica, Georgia native is listed fourth in the league in goals and eighth in total shots. Monroe ranks fifth in total points and points per game, which includes one assist. Senior
Kayla Thompson, who will be playing her final matches on the home pitch this weekend, leads the club in assists with three. The Brandon, Mississippi forward also has three goals this season. Junior
Claire Petersen is the third Gamecock to have multiple goals this season.
Last weekend, senior goalkeeper
Caroline Robinson reached the 300 career saves plateau with a pair of saves in each contest at EIU and SIU Edwardsville. Robinson will begin the weekend listed second all-time on the program's career saves chart. The Hendersonville, Tennessee native needs seven more saves to become JSU's all-time career saves leader. With seven stops, Robinson would surpass former Gamecock keeper Adriana Finelli (1998-2001). Finelli wrapped up her career with 306 career saves.
