JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team continues a busy week at University Field on Tuesday, when the Gamecocks host Alabama State at 5 p.m.
The game will be the first of two midweek home games for the Gamecocks (21-9), who will host Ole Miss on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Admission is free for JSU students and all fans ages 18 and under.
The Gamecocks have won nine of their last 11 games and will look to carry that momentum over into Tuesday's meeting with the Hornets (9-20). It will be the second game between the two schools this season after a 12-1 JSU win on Feb. 10 that opened the season in the Sand Dollar Classic in Mobile.
In that previous meeting, JSU scored seven runs in the second innings and five more in the fourth to account for all of the offense in the 5-inning game.
Taylor West threw three hitless innings to grab the win, while
Stephanie Lewis went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer.
JSU went 4-1 last week, including a 3-1 start to OVC play that included a doubleheader split with UT Martin and sweep of Southeast Missouri. During the weekend, senior
Jamie McGuire went 8-for-10 with two homers, while sophomore
Whitney Gillespie tossed 18 shutout innings to post a 3-0 record and a perfect 0.00 ERA.
Gillespie improved to 11-3 on the year and 38-13 in her career, dropping her career ERA to a 1.57, the fourth-lowest in a career in JSU history. McGuire's two homers pushed her career total to 19, one away from making the Glencoe native the 20th player in school history to hit 20 home runs in a career.
Both the Alabama State and Ole Miss games will be broadcast on the JSU Radio Network on 91.9 FM in Jacksonville, online at www.jsugamecocksports.com and on the TuneIn Radio app by searching for WLJS. Wednesday's game will be streamed on the OVC Digital Network.
