JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team will get back to Ohio Valley Conference play and wrap up a busy week at University Field on Saturday, when the Gamecocks host Murray State in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
The Gamecocks (23-9, 3-1 OVC) and Racers (25-10, 2-1 OVC) will wrap up a stretch of eight games in eight days at University Field in a key OVC doubleheader. Admission is free for all fans ages 18 and under and for JSU students. Tickets for the general public will be $8 on game day but can be purchased online for $5 through Friday.
Saturday will mark the 23rd and 24th all-time meetings between JSU and Murray State, with the Gamecocks winning the last three to even the series at 11-11. Both games of the doubleheader will be streamed live on the OVC Digital Network.
Jax State has won four-straight after a thrilling 5-4 win in 11 innings over No. 24 Ole Miss on Wednesday. The Gamecocks homered four times against the Rebels, including solo homers in the 10th by Anna Chisolm and Jamie McGuire that erased a two-run deficit and then a walk-off shot by Hayley Sims in the 11th.
JSU also enters the weekend having won 33 of its last 34 OVC contests, dating back to the last four games of 205 and including a 26-0 record last season. In league play so far, JSU split a twinbill with UT Martin and swept Southeast Missouri. MSU split with Morehead State and took one from Eastern Kentucky before weather canceled the second game of that doubleheader.
Both JSU and MSU enter the weekend in the top five in the OVC in both batting average and earned run average. The Gamecocks lead the league with a 1.80 ERA, while MSU's 3.04 ranks fifth. JSU is third in batting average at .313, while Murray's .301 average ranks fifth.
JSU is led in the circle by junior and reigning OVC Pitcher of the Year Whitney Gillespie, who is 11-3 with a 1.18 ERA. The Pelham native has yet to allow a run in 16 innings of league play this season, extending her streak of consecutive scoreless innings in OVC play to 33.0. The last earned run in league play she allowed was 40.1 innings ago.
At the plate, sophomore Anna Chisolm leads the team in average (.396), hits (42), runs (35), home runs (8), RBI (30), slugging percentage (.708), on base percentage (.463) and stolen bases (11). She is one of six Gamecocks batting above .300 and enters the weekend with a seven-game hit streak.
Senior Jamie McGiuire had a huge weekend to open league play last week, going 8-for-10 with a pair of homers and four walks. She is batting .374 on the season and is second with seven homers and 24 RBI.
The Racers are led offensively by Jessica Twaddle, who is batting .398 with 11 doubles, eight home runs and 27 RBI. In three league games, she is 4-for-6 with a homer and three RBI. In the circle, Mason Robinson holds a 1.66 ERA and a 17-5 record.
