JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team will usher in the 2018-19 JSU Athletic calendar on Friday, hosting Louisiana-Monroe.
Friday's season-opener will also mark return of athletics to the Jax State campus after the devastating March 19 tornado that hit the city of Jacksonville and the campus. The game will kick off at 7 p.m. and admission is free to all JSU soccer matches.
The Gamecocks will be looking to build upon the effort from the exhibition contest last Sunday at UAB as head coach
Neil Macdonald saw many positives despite the final result. JSU collected 12 total shots against the Blazers, who had eight chances. Senior
Madison Carruthers led the way with five total shots in the friendly match up.
Carruthers, along with senior teammates
Kalea Romano and
Claire Petersen, will lead a junior and sophomore-laden squad. The junior and sophomore classes account for 13 members of the squad, including redshirt junior
Danelle Lindo. Lindo joins Petersen as team captains for the 2018 club.
The season opener will mark the second meeting all-time against the Warhawks after JSU blanked ULM 2-0 in Monroe, Louisiana last season.
The 2018 campaign features nine home games, highlighted by a trio of in-state rivalry contests. JSU and North Alabama, longtime rivals on the NCAA Division II level, will face off against each other for the first time in soccer on August 31. The match with the Lions, who are making the transition to NCAA Division I, gens a three-match homestand. Jax State will renew its rivalries with Troy and Samford following the UNA outing. JSU will host Ohio Valley Conference foes Southeast Missouri, Belmont, UT Martin, Eastern Illinois and SIU Edwardsville.
Following Friday's match, the Gamecocks will play their next three matches away from campus, beginning on Sunday in the Magnolia State against the Tigers of Jackson State. Next weekend, JSU will tour the state of Georgia with duels against Georgia Southern and Georgia State.
