JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team hits the road for its final weekend of non-conference tournament play this Friday and Saturday at the Troy Invitational.
The Gamecocks (6-4) travel to Troy for the first time since 2014, where they will play Florida A&M, Kennesaw State and the host Trojans. JSU opens up the weekend with a Friday afternoon match against FAMU, marking the first time the two schools have met since JSU's historic first round NCAA tournament victory in 2009. It remains the most recent victory by a member of the Ohio Valley Conference in the tournament.
On Saturday, JSU will face a tough task going against a strong Kennesaw State squad at 1 p.m., followed directly by a matchup with the host Trojans at 4:30 without much of a break between. The Owls lead the all-time series 2-1, taking the most recent matchup in Jacksonville during the 2016 Gamecock Classic. For the Trojans, records best indicate that JSU leads the series against its old Gulf South Conference rivals, 13-11.
JSU's match against Troy is scheduled to broadcast on Facebook Live. Links to live stats for all three matches will be available at JSUGamecockSports.com.
A young team to begin with, the Gamecocks are led offensively by a couple of newcomers in Addie Halverson and Lena Kindermann who lead with a team-high 94 kills, apiece. Redshirt sophomore Sadie Anderson sits third on the list with 83, followed by senior Mackenzie Rombach with 77. Rombach's achievements at the net also include a team best 30 blocks as she continues her climb towards the school's Division I career blocks mark. Junior Kaylee Frear has also turned in an impressive 75 kills to go along with 27 blocks.
Tasked with keeping the ball moving around to JSU;s multiple hitters falls to sophomore setter Lexie Libs, who was recently named the OVC Setter of the Week following her efforts in last weekend's 3-0 result from the Gamecock Classic. She's averaging 10.43 assists per set, and has found success in scoring on her own with 22 kills on 44 attempts.
On the opposite end, JSU's defense has held opponents to just .180 hitting and only 11.4 kills per set. The backrow for JSU has been a revolving door early in the season, primarily led by sophomore libero Kaylie Milton. Newcomers Jade Humphrey (69 digs) and Lexie Libs (86 digs) have joined Anderson, Halverson, Ashley Clingan and Dani Steele to create a talented and deep defensive lineup.
