Jax State Falls Late at Murray State

MURRAY, Ky. – For the second time on the weekend, Jacksonville State fell victim to a Murray State walk off win as the Racers erased a late four-run deficit to claim the rubber game of the series, 9-8, on Sunday at Reagan Field.

The Racers rallied on Friday to top Jax State 8-7 before the Gamecocks bounced back to win 4-2 on Saturday.  The Gamecocks will spend the spring break holiday at Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium with a midweek contest on Wednesday, hosting Alabama State.  JSU returns to Ohio Valley Conference play next weekend against Tennessee Tech.

MSU's Tyler Duke drilled a triple off the wall in right field, scoring leadoff walk for the win and the series win.  JSU dropped to 11-13 on the season and even in league play at 3-3, while the Racers improved to 10-13 overall and 6-3 in OVC action.  It was Duke who delivered the game-winning hit in Friday's contest.

Jax State carried an 8-4 lead in to the eighth inning as it overcame a 3-0 early deficit.  Freshman Isaiah Magwood tossed three shutout frames before being touched for a leadoff single to start the eighth.  After a walk by Michael Gilliland, MSU connected on its second home run of the day as Wes Shad's three-run blast trimmed the JSU lead to a run at 8-7.  Senior Cody Willingham was inserted after the bases-clearing hit and MSU greeted him with a triple, followed by a sacrifice fly RBI by Jaron Ronbinson.

JSU bounced back from a slow start with a four-run fourth inning.  The big inning was highlighted by the Gamecocks stringing together six hits.  Junior Andrew Naismith, who finished with three RBI on the day, had one his three in the inning along with sophomore Alex Strachan's RBI single up the middle.  JSU scored a pair if runs on wild pitches.  Naismith plated JSU's final two runs with a single to left field.

The Gamecocks continued to expand the lead in the next inning as sophomore Cole Frederick drove in a run on a double down the left field line and senior Nic Gaddis lifting a sacrifice fly to right field.  Frederick finished the day 3-for-5 at the dish, while Naismith and Carson Crowe had multiple hits in the setback.

All four games of the homestand will be available on ESPN+ and aired on the Gamecock Sports Network.  Tickets for all four games are available at JSUGamecockSports.com.  All JSU students and fans 18 years old and younger get in free.
