Biography

JSU Career: 2018: Made seven appearances on the mound in his first season with the program…earned the starting nod against Samford on February 20…was in line for the win on the opening weekend of the season against Southern Illinois…picked up the win over SIU on February 17 after recording the final two outs of the contest…tossed the first two innings in the start against Samford in Birmingham…made two showings out of the bullpen in conference play against Belmont (April 21) and at SIU Edwardsville (May 19)…registered the win over SIUE after throwing the 1.2 innings.

Prior to JSU: Started his career in the Alabama Community College ranks at Southern Union State Community College in Wadley, Alabama…played for Joe Jordan at SUSCC…made 14 appearances on the bump for the Bison and started nine games, including a pair of complete games as a sophomore and posted a 5-3 record…turned in over 70 innings of work as a sophomore and an earned run average of 2.65…collected 59 strikeouts and allowed 17 walks…surrendered 21 earned runs and one home run throughout the season…awarded the Extremely Academic Achievement Award at SUSCC, an award given to students with a grade point average of 3.5.0-3.79.

High School: Attended Plainview High School and coached by Jeff Brooks…a two-time Alabama Sportswriters Association honoree All-State honoree…achieved honorable mention status in 2014 as a utility player…tabbed to the ASWA First Team as an outfielder in 2015…chosen as the 2015 Gadsden Times Player of the Year… went 7-2 with a 1.09 earned run average, 72 strikeouts and just six walks in 58 innings on the mound…hit .434 with a .521 on-base percentage, 36 RBI, 13 doubles, two triples, 23 stolen bases and 13 walks as a senior…claimed the 2015 Times Journal Pitcher of the Year…also participated in football and basketball at PHS…garnered most valuable player honors at the 2015 Etowah County Basketball Tournament…earned All-County honors in the football field and on the hardwood…a member of the PHS hoops squad that won the Dekalb County Championship in 2015 and helped the PHS football team to a region title….an honor student at PHS and was named the Most Athletic at PHS.

Personal: Full name is Cody Layne Willingham…born November 12,1995 in Fort Payne, Alabama…the son of Mickey and LaKala Willingham…majoring in physical education at JSU…has a younger brother, Cade.
