JACKSONVILLE – Sophomore
Alex Strachan delivered the game-tying home run in the ninth and followed that feat with a game-winning RBI in Jacksonville State's 9-8, 11-inning win over No. 8 Georgia on Wednesday evening on Rudy Abbott Field at
Jim Case Stadium.
Strachan, finished a nine pitch at bat with two outs in the ninth with a solo blast over the left field fence. The blast negated the Bulldogs' go-ahead run in the top half of the frame. The Madison, Alabama native came up to the plate with the bases loaded in the eleventh and connected on a single over third base to give Jax State the victory. Strachan's last two hits gave him a three-hit night. His first hit of the night was an RBI single in the third inning. He finished with three RBI in the contest.
Its second win over a nationally ranked team this season for the Gamecocks. JSU claimed an 11-6 win over then No. 19 Auburn at Plainsman Park. The last time Jax State collected a pair of wins over ranked teams in one campaign was in 2011. The Red and White downed Troy and Auburn, who were both ranked at the time. JSU has now knocked off two different Southeastern Conference opponents in one season in its NCAA Division I history. Jax State posted a pair of wins over Alabama during the 2017 season.
The Gamecocks re-grouped after the Bulldogs showed why they are one of the top programs in NCAA Division I Baseball this season as they erased a 7-2 JSU lead with a five-run fifth inning. JSU scored seven runs in the first four innings to build the lead. UGA put together the five runs on five hits in the inning. The two clubs would play to a 7-7 deadlock until UGA turned in back-to-back doubles in the ninth for the go-ahead run.
Jax State answered UGA's run in the first inning with a pair of two-out RBI. Senior
Nic Gaddis, playing against his home state program, recorded an RBI single, followed by a triple from sophomore
Isaac Alexander. JSU added two more runs in the second with sophomore
Cole Frederick's two-out, two-RBI single. After Strachan's RBI in the third, Gaddis added an RBI on an infield single, followed by a fielder's choice RBI from Alexander.
Gaddis, from Trenton, Georgia had three hits on the night to join Strachan, while Frederick posted a two-hit night.
Jax State used eight different pitchers against UGA, while the Bulldogs worked six different arms. Redshirt freshman
Trey Fortner turned in two solid innings in the start, including three strikeouts. Freshman
Michael Gilliland went 2.2 innings and fanned four Bulldogs. Senior
Cody Willingham picked up the win after pitching the 11th inning. UGA's Aaron Schunk, who has 11 saves already on the season, was handed the loss.
Jax State continues home action this weekend in Ohio Valley Conference play, hosting the Cougars of SIU Edwardsville. The series opener on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
