Gamecocks take team lead heading into Tuesday's final round

JACKSONVILLE – Led by Berta Sanchez's round two low score of 70, the Jacksonville State women's golf team jumped two spots to the lead heading into the final day of the Chris Banister Golf Classic.

Sanchez, who carded a 77 in Sunday's opening round, was one of jsu two players to shoot below par on Monday as the winds swirled throughout the open ranges of the Robert Trent Jones Silver Lakes course. The sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, moved up the individual leaderboard into a tie for third with teammate Valentina Curet at three-over 147, after JSU's leader heading into the day slipped shooting six-over in Monday.

Elon's Kanokwan Ngamwong sits atop the individual leaderboard after two rounds with an even par 144. Murray State's Payton Carter is one stroke behind at 145, with Sanchez, Curet and Charleston Southern's Carolina Engelbredt all followed at +3, 147 after 36 holes.

Senior Ana Perez Altuna's second round 76 makes the Buenos Aires, Argentina, native, the third Gamecock in the top 10 to bring JSU to the front of the field as a team. Meanwhile junior Claire Vermette turned her opening round 79 into a 76 on Monday to help the Gamecocks build their new lead down the stretch.

Jax State entered the day in third, seven shots back of CSU and four behind MSU, but takes a six-stroke lead into Tuesday's final round after a poised performance on moving day.

JSU's 300 team score was one shot back of Sunday's first round, but no other team seemed to be able to piece such a consistent round together. CSU dropped from the lead to third with a 316, while the Racers held their ground in second with 310 round.

Tuesday's final day will begin at 7:30 with teams going off on both the first and 10th tees. Individuals and Alabama State will start their round at 10, while Elon, North Alabama and Tennessee Tech go off from the front nine. The final wave of JSU, MSU and CSU will then tee off from the first hole at 8:15.
