JSU Squares Off With In-State SWAC Foes This Weekend

JACKSONVILLE – After picking up a win last Sunday against Jackson State, the Jacksonville State soccer team will face two more Southwestern Athletic Conference clubs this weekend with a road contest at Alabama State on Friday before hosting Alabama A&M on Sunday.

The JSU-ASU affair will get started at 6 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Field in Montgomery, Alabama, while Sunday's home matinee with AAMU is set for 1 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field. Both matches will be streamed via links on JSUGamecockSports.com with the AAMU contest set for an ESPN+ broadcast. Admission is free to all JSU home soccer matches.

The Gamecocks enter the second weekend of the season at 1-1 after falling to Alabama in the season opener and notching the win over the Tigers of JSU in their last outing. ASU and AAMU will be searching for its first win of the season after dropping a pair of matches last weekend. JSU will be looking to preserve its winning streaks over the Hornets and Bulldogs as it has claimed all eight previous meetings with ASU, while winning the last three matches versus AAMU. JSU leads the all-time series against in-state foe AAMU, 4-1-1 and have claimed the last three meetings by a combined score of 13-0 and has scored 17 goals in the previous five outings with AAMU. The last meeting came during the 2013 season at the JSU Soccer Field with the Gamecocks posting a 4-0 winning result. Jax State and AAMU have only met one time in Normal, Alabama as JSU collected a 5-0 win in 2012. The Bulldogs' lone win in the series was a 4-2 decision in a neutral setting in 2008.

Junior Ali Thomas has led the Gamecocks by example with a team—best five shots, including three on-goal opportunities. She connected on her first goal of the season last Sunday with a scoring play early in the match. The Gamecocks added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute with Nyeemah Prescod-Beckles came off the bench to connect on her first goal as a Gamecock. She finished with three shots in 32 minutes of action. Freshman Katie Moore dished out an assist on Thomas' goal for her first collegiate assist.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Morgan Lerch produced a clean worksheet last Sunday with a shutout of Jackson State. The blanking was Lerch's ninth of her career and moved her one shutout shy of matching former keeper Katelyn Geddings' career mark of 10 saves, which ranks fourth in the program.
