Gamecocks Hand Auburn Its First Midweek Loss

AUBURN, Ala. – The Jacksonville State baseball team did something no other team could do against Auburn in the midweek as the Gamecocks handed the Tigers a 5-2 loss in front of a sold out crowd on Tuesday night at Plainsman Park.

The loss was the first in the midweek for AU, who dropped to 17-8 on the season and 5-0 before Tuesday during the midweek. The Gamecocks picked up their 15th win over the Tigers and their second in three trips to The Plains going back to the 2019 season. JSU moved one game over .500 at 12-11 on the season and returns to ASUN West activity this weekend against the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky. The series starts on Friday, April 1 with first pitch set for 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at JSUGamecockSports.com. JSU students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ and carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.

Jax State doubled up the Tigers with four of the six hits coming as doubles. Junior Carson Crowe claimed two of the doubles and drove in runs with both of them. Crowe switched places with junior T.J. Reeves in the first inning after Reeves belted a one-out double to left field. Senior Cole Frederick had a double in the third inning.

With a one-run lead, Jake Peppers kept AU off the scoreboard until the third inning after the Tigers strung together three hits in the frame. Peppers went 4.0 innings and collected five strikeouts and five hits and the lone run.

The Gamecocks broke up the 1-1 deadlock in the fifth with a pair of two-out runs. After back-to-back walks by Frederick and Reeves and a swipe of second by Frederick. Reeves scored on a wild pitch, followed by Crowe's second double of the game.

After AU cut the lead to 3-2 in the seventh, the Gamecocks responded offensively in the eighth. Sophomore Kody Putnam recorded a bloop RBI single with the infield playing in and senior Javier Ramirez laid down a safety squeeze bunt for an RBI.

Freshman Cole Turner secured his first win as a Gamecock as the first arm out of the bullpen. The Moulton, Alabama native tossed three innings and allowed one run. Senior Dylan Hathcock finished the eighth, while Trey Fortner collected a save.
