Gamecocks Rout Bisons To Even Series

JACKSONVILLE – Junior Carson Crowe delivered a career-high six RBI, including a first inning grand slam that ignited Jacksonville State to a 16-1 rout of Lipscomb to even the ASUN West Division series on Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.

The Gamecocks (17-19, 10-7 ASUN) bounced back from Friday's 4-0 setback in the series opener to force a series-deciding contest on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are available online at JSUGamecockSports.com. JSU students and fans 18 years old and younger are admitted free. The loss snapped Lipscomb's 11-game winning streak and 10-game ASUN West winning streak. The Bisons dropped to 23-16 on the season and 11-6 in the ASUN West.

Crowe's grand slam highlighted the five-run opening frame after Lipscomb starter Collin Witzke walked the first three Gamecocks and pushed the first run of the contest across the plate with a hit by pitch. Crowe sent a Witzke pitch over the fence in right centerfield for the first grand slam by a Gamecock since former JSU standout Alex Webb connected on a bases-clearing home run against Austin Peay during the 2019 season. The Tuscaloosa, Alabama native added his fifth RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field in the fifth and an RBI single in the seventh. He established the new career high after driving in five runs earlier this season at Central Arkansas.

The first inning set the tone for the rest of the game as JSU starter Isaiah Magwood was solid in his return to the weekend roation. After missing last weekend's start, Magwood turned in his second quality start against the Bisons. In the first meeting with LU on March 18, the Hazel Green, Alabama product tossed 6.0 innings, scattered five hits, allowed one run and accumulated seven strikeouts. Magwood nearly mirrored that start with 5.0 innings with one Bisons run and fanned three on Saturday night.

The JSU offense continued to add run support for Magwood with a two-run single by T.J. Reeves in the third inning and an RBI double from Cole Frederick in the fifth to extend the lead to 9-1 following Magwood's five innings of work to qualify for his fourth win of the season. The Gamecocks took advantage of LU's ineffectiveness on the mound as the seven pitchers used by LU combined for 12 walks and five hit-by-pitches.

Reeves registered a three-hit night with trio of RBI to tally his 12th multiple hit game and his fifth three-hit game of the season. He also has five multi-RBI outings, including a pair of three RBI performances. Reeves extended his hitting streak to five games and his on-base streak to eight games. Seven different Gamecocks had a RBI. Sophomore Mason Maners pushed his consecutive games on-base streak to 14 games, while senior Alex Carignan matched Reeves' team-best 15 games of reaching base with a single.

Freshman Tanner Jones covered the final four frames out of the bullpen with three strikeouts and limiting LU to a pair of hits.
