JACKSONVILLE – After enduring some tight tests early in non-conference play, Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis will hold the home opener for the Spring 2023 season this Wednesday in Jacksonville. The Gamecocks will host Lee University (Tenn.) at the JSU Tennis Courts in matches starting at 1 p.m.
"Lee is a very solid D2 program," Jacksonville State head coach Mike Mucci said. "We need to be ready to play from the first point and establish our identity to open our home schedule.
"It's always nice to play the first match of the year at home," Mucci said. "I think both teams are ready and are excited to play on our courts again to begin the season."
Fans unable to attend Wednesday's showdown can follow along with live stats, which will be provided at JSUGamecockSports.com.
Jax State's women (1-1) have split their first two outings. The Gamecocks trounced Tennessee State on Jan. 15, shutting out the Tigers in Nashville with a 7-0 drubbing. Mucci's squad had another solid performance in Starkville on Friday, claiming two doubles wins and a pair of singles victories, but fell just short of upsetting Mississippi State in a 4-3 defeat.
The Gamecock men (0-1), on the other hand, are looking to respond after a loss to Tennessee State. Jacksonville State could not climb out of an early hole in the Music City, suffering a 4-3 setback against a fast-starting Tigers squad. Wednesday's match in Calhoun County will be their first action in ten days.
Lee's men are coming off a 5-2 loss in an exhibition at Belmont on Sunday. Wednesday's matchup will also be considered an exhibition for the Flames, who went 10-7 last season. Lee finished 4-5 in the Gulf South Conference, one of the premier Division II tennis leagues, but fell to national power Valdosta State in the first round of the conference tournament.
The Flame women also lost on Sunday in Nashville, falling 7-0 to the hometown Bruins. Lee had a rare down year on the women's side in 2022, finishing 6-11 overall and 4-6 in conference play. Like their men's team, Lee's women fell in the first round of the GSC Championships to Auburn-Montgomery.
Admission to attend those non-conference matches is free of charge. Action will begin at 1 p.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts. The next home tennis matches will take place on Feb. 4, as Jax State's men and women will have a doubleheader against Wallace State Community College and Young Harris.
