Jax State enters the final match of the regular season needing a win to bolster its chances of earning one of the six spots in the 2023 Conference USA Soccer Championship field. The Gamecocks begin the week tied for sixth with tournament-host Louisiana Tech with five points. The Bulldogs have two matches left on the docket with Liberty and FIU. The Gamecocks will be looking to shale off a three-match losing skid after a trio of tough setbacks to the top-three squads in CUSA. Last weekend, after falling behind in both matches to LU and FIU and drawing even, Jax State dropped both matches with late goals by the Flames and Panthers respectively.
Jax State and Middle Tennessee will be meeting for the 12th time with the Blue Raiders holding a 6-4-1 lead in the series. The previous 11 matches date back to the 1996 season, but today's outing is the first between the two clubs since the 2017 season. Jax State picked up its fourth win over MTSU in that contest with a 4-1 result.
The Gamecocks rank among the best in CUSA in total shots, goals, assists and goals per match. Jax State shares the conference lead in goals with FIU as both have 35 on the season, while the Gamecocks have been credited with a league-best 32 assists. Jax State has turned in 196 shots on the season, which ranks third in the league. The Gamecocks are averaging just over two goals per match.
Individually, junior Laleh Lonteen took over the team lead in goals-scored with a netted ball at Liberty. The Prosper, Texas native has propelled her name in the discussion for CUSA Offensive Player of the Year with her goal total. She shares the top spot in the league with FIU's Nikole Sollis and LA Tech's Kyra Taylor. Lonteen leads CUSA in points (21) and ranks second in the conference in assists (5). Sophomore Naroa Domenech is one goal shy of the team and league lead with seven registered goals.
With the Gamecocks open during the final week of the regular season, the postseason fate will be decided after the final weekend of the CUSA season has been completed. The 2023 CUSA Soccer Championship will get started on November 1 in Ruston, Louisiana with the title match scheduled for Sunday, November 5.
