Tennis to Meet Young Harris, Alabama This Weekend
2/3/2023 3:14:00 PM | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
JACKSONVILLE – After scoring a perfect week on both the women's and men's side, Jacksonville State tennis returns to play on Saturday at home. Both programs will play host to Young Harris at 1 p.m. In addition, the Gamecock men head to Alabama on Sunday for a 4 p.m. pairing.
"This weekend will be a lot of tennis," Jacksonville State head coach Mike Mucci said. "Our hope is that both teams gain some confidence this weekend and also that we go out and play Alabama tough. We are balancing pushing both squads while also getting adequate rest as we prepare for the rest of the season."
The men and women were both slated to host Wallace State Community College at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, but those games have been postponed due to forecasted temperatures of less than 50 degrees. The Jacksonville State men will take on WSCC on Feb. 16 at home, while the women will meet them in Calhoun County on March 1.
Jax State's women (4-1) picked up a 5-2 win over Division II power Lee last Wednesday in their home opener, then shut out Alcorn State two days later in Lorman, Miss. That triumph started a successful weekend in the Magnolia State, as Jacksonville State downed Jackson State 4-3 in a very competitive match the next morning. Ella Tuomela went 3-0 in the no. 4 singles spot for Mucci's squad, posting a pair of two-set wins before scoring a three-set triumph to secure a match win in Jackson, Miss. The sophomore from Finland had three strong performances with Anna Syrova as well, going 3-0 in doubles flights.
Gamecock men's tennis (3-1) also tallied three wins in last week's action. They dominated Lee from the onset in a 6-1 win at the JSU Tennis Courts to open their home slate. Like the women, the men traveled to Mississippi for a couple of weekend tests. They shined as well, defeating Alcorn State 7-0 on Friday and Jackson State 6-1 on Saturday. Alin Fatu led the charge for Jax State, finishing with an unblemished 5-0 record on the week between singles (3-0) and doubles (2-0) play.
Young Harris, a Division II program from Georgia, enters this weekend's matches in search of key victories. Their women suffered a narrow 4-3 loss against Mars Hill on Wednesday to start their season, while the Mountain Lion men's team is 1-0 after a 5-2 triumph against Mars Hill.
The biggest test of the weekend for either Jacksonville State squad will undoubtedly take place on Sunday in Tuscaloosa. The Jax State men will play a red-hot Alabama team that has gone a perfect 5-0 to start the year. The Crimson Tide have earned 7-0 shutouts of Chattanooga, Mercer, and Michigan State, and have also had decisive home wins against Mercer (6-1) and UAB (5-2). Alabama will meet Columbia at 11 a.m. Sunday before the match with the Gamecocks at 4 p.m.
Admission to attend Saturday's matches in Jacksonville is free of charge. Action will begin at 1 p.m. at the JSU Tennis Courts. Furthermore, Sunday's men's match at Alabama will be livestreamed.
