JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State will host rival North Alabama this weekend at University Field to open the 2023 ASUN Conference schedule for the Gamecocks.
JSU is coming off a 2-1 mark in last weekend's final non-conference weekend. The Gamecocks (12-9) took down Western Michigan twice, highlighted by freshman Jaliyah Holmes' perfect game on Friday night.
Holmes 5-3 record in the circle and 2.10 ERA leads JSU's stable of pitchers to begin the season. Sophomores Kat Carter (4.42 ERA) and Sarah Currie (3.36 ERA) also own winning records in through several starts. JSU's pitching depth continues into seniors Hannah Brown and freshman Jordan Eslinger, who has only allowed two earned runs since the start of March.
Jax State will host North Alabama (17-3), who enters on a hot streak to begin 2023, despite a Tuesday night setback to Alabama. The Lions join Oklahoma and Clemson as the only three teams ranked in the top eight nationally in batting average, ERAs and field percentage through the first month of the season.
Historically, the series is tied, 17-17, through 34 meetings. UNA won the first nine matchups during JSU's first two seasons as a program in 1988 and 1989. Since head coach Jana McGinnis started in 1994, the two squads have only played 10 times, largely due to the Divisional separation between the schools for many years.
Junior Lindsey Richardson continued to swing a hot bat hitting a team-best .368 with three homers and 20 RBI. Freshman Linley Tubbs also sits with a trio of home runs, while Lauren Hunt and Holly Stewart continue to post positive-.300 batting marks. Seeing more action over the last two weekends, freshman catcher Makalyn Kyser has made six starts now behind the dish and reached base each game to lead the the Gamecocks' current on-base streak.
The weekend slate begins with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., with game two schedule to start 30 minutes after game one. The two teams return on Sunday for the weekend finale also scheduled for 1 p.m. All games will stream on ESPN+ with live stats also available at JSUGamecockSports.com. Admission to JSU home softball games is free this season compliments of Martin's Family Clothing.
