JACKSONVILLE – After recording 18 goals in the first two matches of the season, the Jacksonville State soccer team will have its first road tests of the season with a pair of matches against in-state rivals in Birmingham.
The Gamecocks first test will be on Thursday against Southern Conference power Samford. The two programs have made the decision to push back the start time of the match from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. due to the extreme heat in the region. Jax State will wrap up the weekend with a trip to downtown Birmingham on Sunday evening to face the Blazers of UAB. The two teams will kick off at 6 p.m. on the UAB campus. Both matches will be available on ESPN+.
Jax State ushered in the Sean Fraser era with shutout wins over Alabama A&M and South Carolina State. The Gamecocks handed Fraser his first win as a Gamecock with a 5-0 win over the Bulldogs before routing SCSU 13-0 on Sunday. The 13 goals on Sunday marked the second-highest scoring outburst in school history, which was highlighted by a pair of Gamecocks scoring four goals each in the offensive onslaught. Sophomore Camryn Davis and junior Laleh Lonteen registered four goals each, which has only happened two other times by former Gamecocks, but not in the same contest. The last Gamecock to have four goals in a game was Angela Tribble in 2002 versus Birmingham Southern.
Davis was tabbed the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week by the league office after a stellar start to the 2023 season. The local product from Gadsden, Alabama, became the second of three Gamecocks during the weekend to record a hat trick inside of a 45-minute period with three goals in the second half of Sunday's outing. Davis is one three soccer players on the NCAA Division I level to have four goals in a game this season after the opening weekend. Davis finished with 11 points on the weekend after adding an assist to her stat line and finished with nine total shots, including five on-goal looks.
Davis was one of seven different Gamecocks to score a goal in the opening weekend. Sophomore Naroa Domenech was the first of the three Gamecocks to record a hat trick as she delivered three goals in her Jax State debut against AAMU. The transfer from Oklahoma Wesleyan added her fourth goal of the season on Sunday. Sophomore Ella Staub tallied a pair of goals in the SCSU contest, while senior Kylie Wells and redshirt freshman Tia Nagle got in the scoring column. Wells opened her senior slate with four assists, while Lonteen and Staub were credited with three and two assists respectively.
Defensively, Jax State limited the opposition last weekend to eight total shots with six saves. Sophomore Bailey Dean collected five stops in 135 minutes, while freshman Kacey Powell was in goal in the final 45 minutes against SCSU.
The Bulldogs of Samford will be looking for their first win of the season after a season-opening draw at Auburn and a 1-0 setback to DePaul on Sunday. UAB will face Alabama State on Thursday in search of its first win of the season after a pair of close losses to Georgia Southern and nationally ranked Alabama.
Following the two matches in Birmingham, the Gamecocks will begin the month of September against Alcorn State on Friday, Sept. 1 at the Jax State Soccer Complex.
