Jax State Drops Sunday Night Contest at UAB

BIRMINGHAM – The Jacksonville State soccer team concluded the first weekend away from the home pitch with a 3-0 loss to UAB on Sunday evening at PNC Field on the UAB campus.

After opening the season with a pair of wins on the pitch of the Jax State Soccer Complex, the road was unkind with a pair of setbacks in the Birmingham area. Jax State will look to shake off the weekend results next Friday at home against Alcorn State.

The Blazers tallied the eventual game winner in the 18th minute with a goal from Carlyn Pressley. Pressley was able to connect on a cross from Maiya Clark. UAB padded its lead with the second goal of the opening half in the 35th minute. Canby Biddle delivered her first goal of the season to extend the lead.

"We were better tonight. There were three moments in the game when they beat us on a press and then one on the corner and then the late goal. Outside of that, from box-to-box, we did really well. Inside the box, we have to be better," said head coach Sean Fraser.

Pressley finished the night with a pair of goals with a late netted ball in the 86th minute. UAB out-shot the Gamecocks, 18-1. Junior Ella Owen registered the shot, which came in the opening 45 minutes.

"We are growing up and we are learning and I thought we did some really good things tonight," said Fraser. "We have to create more and we have to be a bit more – not so nice to play against, but we will learn that."

After eight saves on Thursday against Samford, sophomore Bailey Dean collected seven saves.

"It will be a Friday-Sunday turnaround, so it will be important that we recover and build up to that. It will be important to progress from where wer are right now," added Fraser.

The Gamecocks match with the Lady Braves will get started at 7 p.m. Admission is free to all Jax State home matches. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be available at JaxStateSports.com.
