JACKSONVILLE – After nine non-conference matches, the Jacksonville State soccer team will play its first-ever Conference USA match on Sunday, opening the league slate with Sam Houston.
The Gamecocks and Bearkats will kick off at 1 p.m. at the Jax State Soccer Complex. Admission is free to all home matches. The match will also be streamed on ESPN+.
Jax State capped off the non-conference schedule with a 5-4 mark and having momentum from Thursday's 1-0 win over in-state rival Alabama State in Montgomery. The Gamecocks have protected the home pitch this season with wins in three-of-the-four home outings this season. SHSU, idle since last Sunday's win over Incarnate Word. The win moved the Bearkats' overall mark heading into CUSA action at 2-3-2.
Jax State and Sam Houston will be facing off against each other for the first time on the pitch. Sunday's match marks the first CUSA match for both sides. SHSU moved to CUSA after being a member of the Southland Conference. SHSU is just the fifth team from the state of Texas that the Gamecocks have played (North Texas, Rice, Stephen F. Austin and TCU).
Through nine matches under first-year head coach Sean Fraser, the Gamecocks have accumulated 27 goals and has limited the opposition to 13 on the season. Jax State ranks among the CUSA leaders and NCAA Division I Soccer leaders as conference play begins. The Gamecocks' goal total leads the league and is listed ninth in the national statistics. Jax State also leads CUSA in assists (25) and total points (79).
Individually, junior Laleh Lonteen is listed among the CUSA offensive leaders. The Prosper, Texas native ranks second in the league in goals with six and near the top of the points-scored list with 16 on the season. The six goals scored so far this season for Lonteen is the most by a Gamecock in a single season since former Gamecock Danielle Monroe tallied seven goals on the season. Sophomore Naroa Domenech netted her sixth goal of the season in the win over ASU to join Lonteen atop the team leaderboard in goals.
Defensively, goalkeeper Bailey Dean has turned in four shutouts in eight matches on the season and ranks third in CUSA in saves per match with 3.66 stops per match.
Following Sunday's conference home opener, the Gamecocks will hit the road for the first time in Conference USA on September 24 with a trip to Ruston, La. to face the Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech. Jax State returns to the home pitch next Sunday, hosting Western Kentucky. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
