JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State will begin the final month of the regular season with a pivotal Conference USA match against UTEP on Sunday in El Paso, Texas.
The CUSA match will start at 1:30 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN+.
Sunday's trip to the Sun City will be the first for the Gamecocks and the first contest in the state of Texas since the program visited the Lone Star State for a weekend set with Rice and TCU in 2004. It will be Jax State farthest trip west since playing at New Mexico State during the 2011 season.
Both clubs enter the contest having a full week of preparation as Jax State posted a draw with Western Kentucky last Sunday, while the Miners also drew even with Louisiana Tech. The Gamecocks (5-5-2, 0-1-2 CUSA) are unbeaten in their last two outings after the first draw of the season at Louisiana Tech on September 21. UTEP brings a 1-9-2 overall record into the match and its first win in conference play (0-2-1). Sunday's duel will be the first between the two sides.
The Gamecocks begin the new month as one of the top-two teams in CUSA in six different statistical categories. Jax State leads the conference in total goals with 31 on the season through 12 matches this season, which also puts it fourth in the league in goals per match (2.58). The Gamecocks are perched atop CUSA in total assists (29) and total points (91). With Jax State leading the league in those categories, it ranks among the NCAA Division I leaders. The total goals and assists marks rank ninth and 10th respectively in the NCAA, while the overall scoring offense ranks 27th.
Individually, 12 different Gamecocks have contributed for the 31 goals this season, which is the most by the program since a 54-goal season in 2014. Junior Laleh Lonteen leads the club in goals with seven on the season. Her seventh came last week in the final minute against WKU to draw even with the Lady Hilltoppers. The Prosper, Texas native returns to her home state on Sunday ranked second in CUSA in goals. She trails FIU's Nikole Solis, who has eight goals this season. The seven goals is the most by a Gamecock in a single season since Danielle Monrow collected seven goals in the 2017 campaign. Sophomore Naroa Domenech and sophomore Camryn Davis have six and five goals this season.
Sophomore Salome Kerguillec turned in a solid week against LA Tech and WKU with a pair of goals and an assist against the Bulldogs and played a key role in starting Jax State's offensive runs in the WKU match. Freshman Emma Oubrik made her first career start at LA Tech and was in the starting lineup against WKU. Oubrik tallied a goal against the Bulldogs to spark the Gamecocks comeback.
Sophomore Bailey Dean has anchored Jax State's goalkeeping duties this season. Dean has tallied four shutouts and leads CUSA in total saves with 48 and is averaging 4.00 saves per contest.
Following Sunday's trip to UTEP, the Gamecocks will return home on October 8, hosting CUSA front runner New Mexico State. Match time is set for 1 p.m. Admission is free to all home matches
