JACKSONVILLE – After recording a pivotal win last Saturday against UTEP, the Jacksonville State soccer team will look to carry the momentum out west this weekend with a trip to New Mexico State.
The Gamecocks and Aggies will face off against each other on Saturday in Las Cruces, New Mexico at the NM State Soccer Complex. Kick off is set for 8 p.m. CT.
Jax State enters the contest holding the sixth spot in the Conference USA standings with seven league points. The top six teams in CUSA earn spots in the conference tournament in November. With the win over UTEP, the Gamecocks improved to 2-3-1 in CUSA action and 7-7-1 overall. NM State begins the week at 8-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in league outings. The Aggies blanked Kennesaw State last weekend, 2-0, on the home pitch.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Jax State and New Mexico State will be meeting for the third time and the second outing as conference mates. The Aggies and Gamecocks met in back-to-back seasons during the 2010 and 2011 campaigns. Jax State visited the Land of Enchantment in 2010 and NM State traveled to Jacksonville in 2011. NM State has won all three previous meetings with Jax State. The Aggies made a return trip last season as members of CUSA and claimed a 2-0 win at the Jax State Soccer Complex.
LAST TIME OUT
Jax State was successful on its final corner kick of last Saturday's Conference USA battle with UTEP as the corner kick in the 88th minute set up the Gamecocks for a 1-0 win over the Miners at the Jax State Soccer Complex. Sophomore Emma Oubrik took Jax State's 13th corner kick opportunity in the 88th minute and delivered the ball in front of the goal for freshman Abby Cole to get it in the back of the net. Both Oubrik and Cole were late substitutions into the contest with Oubrik coming on to the pitch for the final 17 minutes, while Cole was brought on just before the corner kick. It was a tough, physical contest between the two sides with just 12 combined shots between the two. The Gamecocks controlled the possession and turned in 10 shots. Graduate Tori Paul, who joined the Gamecocks after playing at UTEP, led the club with three shots.
LEAGUE LEADERS
Jax State ranks among the top clubs in Conference USA statistical charts in goals, assists and total points. Entering the week, the Gamecocks lead the league with 34 goals, 35 assists and 103 total points. Those numbers also rank among the national leaders in NCAA Division I Soccer. Jax State's scoring offense ranks 22nd in the nation with a 2.27 scoring average through 15 matches. The Gamecocks rank in the top-25 in points (20th), goals (20th) and assists (15th).
