
Gamecocks Host Liberty To Begin Conference USA Action

JACKSONVILLE – After a 10 day break from competition, the Jacksonville State soccer team returns to action on Thursday against Conference USA front runner Liberty in the conference opener for both clubs.
The CUSA lid lifter is set for 7 p.m. at the Jax State Soccer Complex. Admission is free to all home matches. The contest with the Flames will also be available on ESPN+.
About the Series vs. Liberty
Jax State and Liberty will be meeting for the fourth time and just the second time at the Jax State Soccer Complex. The Flames have won the first three meetings between the two clubs. Jax State and LU faced off twice as members of the ASUN before both programs moved to Conference USA. The Gamecocks dropped a 2-1 decision to the Flames last season in Lynchburg, Va.
Sitting Idle
Jax State returns to action after 10 days away from competition. The Gamecocks' last non-conference road activity at Mississippi Valley State on September 12 was postponed due to Hurricane Francine tracking through the state of Mississippi. Jax State is coming off a 2-0 setback to Georgia Southern on September 8. Jax State and MVSU have rescheduled the match for Monday, September 23 in Itta Bena, Mississippi at 4 p.m. on the MVSU campus.
Helping Hands
Through the first five weeks into the 2024 season, Jax State ranks among the Conference USA leaders in assists with 17 on the season. Entering the week, the Gamecocks share second place in CUSA with Middle Tennessee. Liberty begins conference play atop CUSA with 21 assists. Individually, four different Gamecocks have been credited with an assist. Graduate Melissa Kuya Strobel leads the club wih four assists, while senior Salome Kerguillec has three assists. Junior Naroa Domenech and junior Nancy Almanza have two assists each. Jax State ranks 33rd in NCAA Division I soccer in assists per game, while Kuya Strobel is listed 38th individually in the NCAA stats.
Schedule Addition
Jax State has added a match to the 2024 slate with the addition of a non-conference home match against Talladega College on Sunday, September 22. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
Upcoming Schedule
Thursday's Conference USA opener begins a busy stretch to wrap up the month of September for the Gamecocks. Jax State will wrap up the weekend with Talladega, followed by Monday's road date with MVSU. The month wraps up with a pair of league matches against Sam Houston (Sept. 26) and Louisiana Tech (Sept. 29).
Welcome Back Alumni
With it being Homecoming weekend on the Jax State campus this weekend, the soccer program will welcome back its alumni. The weekend festivities begin with an alumni match at the Jax State Soccer Complex beginning at 6:30 p.m.
