Jax State Soccer Faces Alabama State On Thursday

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team will look to get back on track Thursday night against in-state foe Alabama State.

Kick off is set for 7 p.m. at the Jax State Soccer Complex. Admission is free and the contest will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Gamecocks are working to shake off a three-match losing streak after starting the season with a pair of wins. Jax State has dropped three tough decisions, including a pair of road setbacks. The last time out on the pitch, the Gamecocks fell to Chattanooga, 1-0, after the Mocs withstood a bevy of shots from Jax State in the final half to preserve the contest last Sunday.

Jax State and ASU will be meeting for the 12th time and for the fourth consecutive season. The two in-state foes have faced each other since the 2006 season. The Gamecocks have won the previous 11 meetings against the Hornets, including a 1-0 decision last season in Montgomery. Jax State has outscored ASU, 57-5 in the previous 11 matches against each other.

Through the first three weeks into the 2024 season, Jax State ranks among the Conference USA leaders in assists with nine on the season. Entering the week, the Gamecocks rank fourth in CUSA behind Liberty, Middle Tennessee and New Mexico State. Individually, four different Gamecocks have been credited with an assist. Graduate Melissa Kuya Strobel and senior Salome Kerguillec share the team lead with three assists each through the first four matches of the season. Junior Naroa Domenech has added a pair of assists. Junior Nanaka Inaba joined assist leaders with an assist at UNC Asheville.

Following the match with the Hornets, the Gamecocks will have a pair of road outings to prepare for Conference USA action. Jax State will visit Georgia Southern on Sunday in Statesboro, Georgia and travel to Itta Bena, Mississippi for Thursday date with Mississippi Valley State. Jax State's CUSA opener against league front runner Liberty is scheduled for September 19.

Sunday's battle with the Eagles of GSU is set for 12 p.m. CST and will be available on ESPN+.
