Soccer Drops Road Contest at Delaware, 2-0

NEWARK, Del. — The Jax State soccer team fell 2-0 to the Delaware Blue Hens in a Conference USA match on Thursday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.

The Gamecocks fall to 6-6-3 on the year overall and 0-4-1 in CUSA play, while Delaware improves to 9-1-4 overall and 2-1-2 in CUSA play. 

To open up the match, the Gamecocks came out and put up four shots in the first nine minutes of action, with three shots being on goal. Louise Featherstone notched the first shot of the game in the first 90 seconds.

In the first 45 minutes, Jax State totaled eight shots with three on goal, and two corner kicks. Delaware put up three shots and only one on goal, which was saved by Ella Holmberg in the 44th minute of play. With the eight to three margin in shots, Jax State out-shot opponents in the first half in back-to-back matches.

In the 49th minute, Delaware got on the board with a score from a set piece, with Gabby Riley placing the ball in the net to go ahead of the Gamecocks.

Delaware extended the lead in the 74th minute with a break-away goal by Brooke Vogel.

The Gamecocks ended with 17 shots to Delaware's 11, including six shots on goal to the Blue Hen's three. Both sides had five corner kicks on the night.

Kaia Elverum ended with a career-high in shots, putting up seven shots with two shots on goal in the contest.

Jax State will return to action on Saturday at 5 p.m. Central / 6 p.m. Eastern, taking on the Liberty Flames in Lynchburg, Virginia.
