Jax State Opens CUSA Play With UTEP This Weekend

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Jax State Softball team opens up its Conference USA slate this weekend with a three game set against UTEP at Jana McGinnis Field. The Gamecocks and Miners open up the series on Friday, March 7 at 6 p.m.

Holmes Named CUSA Pitcher of the Week
Following a pair of complete game shutouts at the Black & Gold Challenge, Jax State pitcher Jaliyah Holmes earned Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors. Holmes pitched two shutouts in the weekend event, earning two victories. The junior from Sharpsburg, Ga. finished her week with 14.0 innings, zero earned runs and 18 strikeouts. She earned her career high 14 strikeouts against UAPB on Saturday.
Lucky Number Sixteen
For the second consecutive game, Jax State tallied 16 runs. Entering the week, Jax State had not scored 16 or more runs in a game since Feb. 16, 2020 in a 20-9 win over Charleston. Jax State has outscored its last two opponents 32-2 this week.
Towards The Top
The Jax State pitching staff has been elite in 2025, posting a team ERA of 1.57 through 22 contests. That mark ranks Jax State fifth in all of NCAA Division I softball. The Gamecocks only trail Tennessee, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Syracuse, while sitting just ahead of Florida and LSU.
Gamecocks Down No. 17 Mississippi State
Behind a complete game shutout from Kat Carter and timely hitting from the Gamecocks, Jax State knocked off No. 17 Mississippi State at the Rocket City Softball Classic, 3-0. Abbi Perkins led the Gamecocks at the plate, with a pair of fourt inning RBI's while coming around to score herself. The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning before Carter escaped the jam and earned her fifth victory of the season.
Hot Rod
Jax State sophomore Emma Elrod wasted no time getting her 2025 started, leading Jax State in a few offensive categories through 20 games so far this season. Elrod leads Jax State in hits (30), doubles (6), home runs (6), runs (23) and slugging percentage (.691). Elrod enters the midweek riding a seven-game hitting streak.
Gamecocks Double up on CUSA Awards
For the second consecutive week, Jax State has earned the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week award. Kat Carter earned the honors on Feb. 24 before Jaliyah Holmes followed suit by earning the honors on March 3.
Boland Wins Number One
On Feb. 7, Julie Boland picked up her first career win over North Florida, 3-1. The Gamecocks used RBI's from Amber Reed and Ashley Phillips while Kat Carter finished with a 7.0 inning, no earned run outing against the Ospreys.
