JACKSONVILLE—Jacksonville State University Vice President for Athletics
Greg Seitz has hired Corey Smith as the fifth soccer coach in program history.
The Ranburne, Ala. native comes to Jax State after serving as an assistant at Tennessee Tech last season following a stint at his alma mater of Birmingham-Southern where he was the head women's coach after working as an assistant on the men's side.
"We are excited to welcome Corey Smith to Jacksonville State as our new head women's soccer coach," said
Greg Seitz, Vice President for Athletics. "Corey brings a dynamic combination of coaching experience, player development, and a championship mindset that aligns perfectly with the goals of our program."
His players have racked up 37 all-conference awards, which includes four offensive players of the year and three conference newcomers of the year.
"I want to say thank you to
Greg Seitz,
Greg Bonds, and
Misty Ray for trusting my vision for the Jax State soccer program and giving me this opportunity," said Smith. "I'm excited to bring my passion for soccer and developing student athletes to Jacksonville and for the bright future on our horizon. I can't wait to join the athletics department and start this journey with the Jax State Soccer Family."
Tennessee Tech was the Ohio Valley Conference regular season champions during Smith's lone season as the first assistant coach in Cookeville and led the league in goals with 31. He was the head women's coach for Birmingham-Southern's final season in 2023 after serving as an assistant for the men's team the prior four seasons.
He was on the bench during two major program milestones—winning the first Southern Athletic Association regular season title in program history during the 2020 season and the team's first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022.
Smith has also been a staff coach with Hoover-Vestavia Soccer of MLS Next and worked in various roles with the Pele Academy for two years.
"His passion for student-athlete success—both on and off the field—was evident throughout the search process," said Seitz. "We're confident he will lead Gamecock Soccer with integrity, energy, and a clear vision for sustained success in Conference USA."
