JACKSONVILLE — Jax State baseball will conclude its season-opening homestand with two midweek contests against the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils. Games are set for Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Wednesday at 11 a.m. from Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.
Jax State is 5-2 heading into the series, coming off of a sweep of the Toledo Rockets over the weekend. Jax State's pitching looked stellar through the first two games, only conceding a single run in that frame. From February 15 to February 21, the Gamecocks pitching only gave up three runs in 38 innings. Sunday's game saw 10 combined runs scored in the first three frames of action and several lead changes. Toledo held a 9-6 lead in the seventh, but Caleb Johnson launched a grand slam down the right field line to take the lead for good. Blauser added two insurance runs to secure the 12-9 win and the sweep.
Mississippi Valley State comes to Jacksonville with an 0-4 record, falling in all four games to Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas. The Delta Devils fell in run-rule fashion in three of the four games.
Jax State and Mississippi Valley State meet for the first time on the diamond. MVSU is the fourth SWAC school the Gamecocks will play or have played. Jax State is 55-13 against SWAC schools (Alabama A&M, Alabama St., Jackson St.).
Jax State has opened the season at home in six of the previous seven seasons, with 2023 being the only season the Gamecocks have opened the season on the road. Through the first seven games of the nine-game homestand this season, Jax State is 5-2. With two wins to close the homestand, Jax State would match 2025's seven wins as the most in a opening homestand since 2020.
Jax State will start RHP James Wilson on Tuesday and RHP Taylor Waldron on Wednesday. The Delta Devils will start RHP Chris Brown on Tuesday and RHP Clint Lafferty on Wednesday.
